Trip gives insight on cross-border issues
•from page 18A
provide participants with some
insight on cross-border issues.
"Really the issues on both sides
of the border aren't much different.
They just can't seem to get together
on some things, often it's a political
process which gets in the way," he
observed.
When interviewed for The Farm
Progress Edition in late February,
VanderBurgt was looking forward
to the international travel seminar to
Mexico and California (February 28
to March 9), where activities and
discussions related to NAFTA,
water conservation and world grain
production were among those on
the agenda.
"A lot of the value of the trips
depends on who you get to talk to,"
said VanderBurgt. If the Mexican
government, for example, directs
the tour's focus on certain things
they want to promote, you won't
get the whole picture.
"One of the Issues in Mexico are
the problems with NAFTA. Ob-
viously there are problems for them
or they wouldn t be having the
trouble they are having (with im-
poverished native groups which
depend on farming). If we get to
talk to the right people, hopefully,
we'll find out what their problems
are," said VanderBurgt.
While VanderBurgt feels
Canadians need to increase
awareness of the global nature of
today's economy, they must not
lose sight of the need to maintain
domestic food production capability.
"We need guys that are diplomats
and we're going to need guys that
go right for the jugular, as in some
cases that may what it takes to
get some action."
"I think we have to accept that it
(agriculture) is a global industry,
distance doesn't mean anything
anymore, we have to make sure the
consumer realizes that food
production in Canada is essential.
"I may not be us, but our children
or grandchildren or some generation
down the road will realize that we
shouldn't have given up that food
producing potential that we have
here."
As an AALP participant, Vander-
Burgt naturally feels that agriculture
is in need of strong leaders in the
years to come. But, he said, they
shouldn't necessarily all come out
of the same mold.
How you land determines your injuries
Falls are inevitable --virtually
everyone will fall down. It's
how you land that determines if
you get up with only dirt on
your pants, or if you stay down
with an injury. The diagrams
below show the 'right' and
'wrong' way to land.
The wrong way is to follow
your natural instincts as you fall.
You tense up, resist and put out
a straight arm to take up the
shock. Do it this way and you're
almost sure to get hurt --maybe
seriously:
The right way to fall is the
way athletes, acrobats and
paratroopers have been trained to
fall. Don't resist --once you've
bought the ticket, you're going
to take the trip. Instead, relax, go
limp, and try to roll as you land,
easing yourself down with bent
arms.
