Area residents are invited to donate a loonie and sign their banner (shown here by some of the team members) to help them raise money for the trip. The team is (front row, left to right) coach Carol Humphries, Mandy TLMM CUMMING PHOTO Hadenko, Charlene Townsend, Carly Price, coach Sandra Mclnally, (second row) Colleen Collins, Chnsta Leonhardt, Jen Marion, Jen Szusz, Anne Kerslake, Susan McLachlan and Jill Wood. Other members of the team include Jen Gallagher, Kerri Weber, Heather McMillan, Tatum Mathers, Shawna Stone, Ronda Schnurr and Debbie Hoggart. Broomball team heads to nationals BY MANDY HADENKO Oh...what is that glare? I think that it's that silver medal on that girl's shirt. Yes, that is right, the Juvenile Girls' Jr. Broomball team won a silver medal at the Provincials in Palmerston. Accord- ing to the girls this medal is a silver-plated gold medal. Through- out the many intense practices every Wednesday night at 8 p.m., the dream of going to the nationals was vague. Last year an invitation was offered by sadly declined due to lack of funds (also considering that it was in Regina, Sask. Not only has the team grown mentally but most importantly physically. The fact that they have grown to know each other closely off the ice but especially on the ice contributes to the overwhelming success of this team. The plays are sharp and accurate and always leaves Carol (the coach) smiling. Although the first game that was played at the Provincials was against the dreaded Eastern team the strong, harthworking and most definitely determined Central West team left the Eastern team shaking in their shoes. Even though the score was in favour of Eastern the Central West team knew that they would be seeing them in the gold medal ame. When the final game ended the Central West girls had tears falling, but only tears of sheer satisfaction were shed knowing that not only had they played their best but they were going to fulfil their dream...of going to the Nationals. Within seconds of knowing that the Nationals were feasible, the planning to fundraise started. Now that our fundraising ideas are underway the countdown of the trip is on. Without the dedication and patience from two hardworking coaches the girls would not have the interest to strive only for excel- lence. Cheers :o out to Sandra CENTS GO DOWN - The Seaforth Centenaires' played three close games in the playoffs 'That's all, folks!' for Cents The Seaforth Centenaires' powerplay backfired big time for the . final time this season Wednesday night at Lucan. Wil Giles scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway with 1:15 left in regulation time to give the Lucan Irish 6 a 4-3 win and four -game sweep of their Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D"evelopment League quarter -final. Three of the four games in the series were decided by one goal, the only blowout was the only game played in Seaforth, a 6-1 victory for the Irish Tuesday night. The Centenaires officially petitioned the OHA for 100 per cent of the gate receipts prior to Wednesday's fourth game at Lucan, after association president Brent Ladds earlier that day ordered Seaforth to play there, rather than at Brussels where Seaforth had booked ice time for a second "home game" in the series. The first two games in the playoff were played at Lucan, after liability concerns led the Centenaires to postpone Friday's scheduled start because of road conditions and closures. Scaforth jumped into a 3-0 lead by the 11:02 mark of the first period of Wednesday's clincher at Lucan, under taunting banners on the home side that read "Welcome to the Brussels Arena", on goals by Tim Barton, Ted Sills and Jason Hayter on the powerplay. That signalled the end for Lucan's starting goaltendcr Knyvct Carson who was yanked in favour of veteran Steve Watson. He was as much the difference in the game as anything, although Seaforth's Dave Nahrgang also played terrific in net, at one point robbing league MVP Greg Deprest on a clear-cut breakaway. The Irish got one back on the powerplay, with Jason Dunseith in the box for elbowing, as the first period ended 3-1 for Seaforth. The Irish got two more goals, including an "own goal" on the powerplay directed past Nahrghang by a Seaforth defcnceman, in the second period that ended 3-3. Tac only penalty called in the third by referee Eric Bryce was a cross-checking to Lucan's Jeremy Jemec at 17:37 of the third. Centenaires' coach Maurice Guy opted once again to sit a defenceman in favour of a forward on the point on the subsequent powerplay which led to a breakaway for the penalty killers. This time the shorthanded goal drove the final nail in Seaforth's coffin as Giles got his second of the game for the winners. Shorthanded goals " plagued the lackluster Seaforth powerplay all season. Tuesday night at Seaforth was a disappointing performance all round, as the home side only managed 10 shots the first two periods, trailed 2-0 after the first then 5-1 after the second. Shots on goal: NA Goal: Lucan (Watson), Seaforth (Nahrgang) Referee: Steve Miller Attendance: 100 est Centenaire shooter to solve the riddle of Watson, who was solid in the Irish net throughout the series. It was all sweet revenge for Lucan, who were ousted in four - straight under a barrage of brooms by Seaforth in last year's semi- finals, the only time in the past eight years the Irish had not made it to the Western Division final. Goaltender Tim Swan of Stratford, who played very well for Seaforth the first two games of the series, missed the season's finale, on his way to a funeral in the United States where his uncle was shot and killed Tuesday. Veteran Sills was Seaforth's leading scorer in the series with two ,goals and three assists, his final games as a junior as he played overage this season and is ineligible for next. If you arc interested in helping to sponsor the Juvenile Girls' Jr. Broomball team in their quest to attend the nationals, contact Carol Humphries after 5 at 522-0703. Local basketball players all-stars Brian Bachcrt and Jason Murray represented Seaforth District High School's senior Golden Bears at the Huron Conference all-star boys basketball game at Exeter Tuesday. Brad Dillon and Sean Ludwig represented the junior Bears. Devereaux wins hockey award for sportsmanship Seaforth native Boyd Devereaux of the Stratford Cullitons was named the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship and ability at the Midwestern Junior B Hockey League's recent annual awards banquet at Waterloo. The 16 -year-old in his second season with the Cullitons was passed by American teammate Mark Murphy on the final weekend of the regular schedule, so ended three points shy of winning the league scoring title. Boyd spent that final weekend playing with Team Ontario at the Canada Winter Games in Grande Prairie, Alta. Danny Wildfong, another player who started his junior hockey career in Seaforth, scored live assists in a game for the now -eliminated St. Marys Lincolns last week. He will be playing hockey on scholarship at Colgate University in the United States next year. Bowler Oliver Pryce rolls high single On a beautiful Friday, arch 3, thirty-two Seniors turned out to bowl. Oliver Pryce came through with a brilliant high single, 285. John Van Loon took high triple, 585. Olave Little with a 196 Single and Ann Wood with 494 triple were high women. Bowling over 200 were John Aubin 216; Sandy Doig 211; Ron Bennett 201 and Campbell Wcy 200. The Maple Leafs team was the only one to take seven points. This was indeed a team effort as John, Cord, Pauline, Catherine, Marilyn and Marjorie all came through with above average scores. Ken McDonald and Gladys Doig, who arc new bowlers this year, are having very respectable scores. I have been suffering with a bad cold the last two weeks so 1 must thank Catherine Staples for bringing the sheets to me. Hope to be back next week.
