Hat trick helps Winthrop team
BROOMBALI.
FEB. 22, 1995
WINTHROP 4 - SOCIALITES 1
Hcy! There goes Janice. What a
game for her as she cleans up on
the goals for a hat trick full, a
single goal by Barb Elliott, lots of
quick passes by Tammy Nash,
Tammy Kennedy and Sandra
Mclnally. The Socialites had plenty
of u..armination but little esteem
for only one goal scored by 'who?'
not again. Yes! you're right, it was
none other than Susan McLachlan,
a direct pass from Marg Henderson.
Great game!
KNIGHTS 4 • RAIDERS 0
Tlic Raiders have plenty of
energy. it's the goal scoring that's
usually a little short. Lots of goals
for the Knights scored by Larry
Bacr, Jim Nyenhuis, Larry Bcrien
and Steve Hulshof, assistance came
from Harold Hugill, Chris
Wcemink, Paul Nyenhuis and Mark
Louwagic.

MEN'S BROOMBALL
FEB. 23, 1995
EASY RIDERS 2 - DUMPERS 0
Dumpers played well but its'
tough playing the game and the refs
also. Easy Riders couldn't do any-
thing wrong as th.:y wcrc in the
right place at the right time for
scoring goals, which wcrc achieved
by our hero (1) Ed Van Miltenburg
and speedy Jim Butson. '!'lie passes
were right on from Chris Poland,
Steve Eckert Jr. and Darrel Eckert.
Very quick gatne.
GRADS 3 • PARR LINE 2
Parr Line starts the scoring with a
quick non -assistance goal by Kevin
Van Den Ncuckcr as he sneaks
around the back of the goal net and
slips the ball into the wide opening
as he manoeuvres around the
opposing goalie still lying behind
the net. Second goal by wee Dennis
Dolmagc. He thanks Paul Gibbings
and Mark Ryan for the neat pass.
However the Grads are tired of
trailing so they pop in three quick
goals scored by Tony Van Den
Heuvel, Martin Wynja and Al
Wynja, hot passes by Mac O'Neill
and Gary Verhoog.
RUSTLERS 2 - ROYALS 0 •
it's not that the Royals can't
score it seems there is always too
many men in their road who keep
on deflecting their shots. Where
was the guy last week for the Rust-
lers as Don King cleans up house
for a hot-dog hat trick. Great shoot-
ing from the blue line, 'Don't His
helpers wcrc Dave Vanneste and
Rob Van Dicpcn. Rustlers' goalie
Mr. 'Tim Cumming' had the shut
out.
In Broomball on March 2, 1995 at

Close, but no cigar in
Cents' playoff games
It would have been waved off a
split second later. Instead Mike
Robb's unassisted goal at 7:12 of
the third period was the winner and
difference at Lucan Sunday
afternoon as the Irish 6 nipped the
Seaforth Centenaires 2-1 to take a
2-0 lead in their Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D"evelopment
League playoff.
Wednesday night, also at Lucan,
Cllrisuen Criel's slapshot from the
point, with 4:05 left on the clock,
also stood as an unassisted game
winner as the Irish opened the best -
of -seven Western Division quarter-
final with a 4-3 win.
Both were excellent hockey
games, with the outcomes up in the
air until the final hom and with the
team making the fewest mistakes
emerging as the winner - in both
cases Lucan, now riding an 11 -
game winning streak. -
Friday night's scheduled second
game in the series was postponed
because of the weather conditions
so the Centenaires host the next two
games in the series; Tuesday night
(results were not available at press
time) and Friday night at 8:30 at
the Seaforth and District
Community Centres. This is the
first time the Cents have played on
their home ice in three weeks.
Game five, if necessary, will be at
Lucan Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Games six and seven, again if
necessary, would both be beyond
the Mar. 5, OHA deadline, back at
Seaforth next Tuesday night at
8 p.m., then at Lucan next
Wednesday at 8;15.
There is no assist on the
scoresheet but Robb got lots of help
on the winning play Sunday
afternoon, one of the oldest in the
book. The Irish crashed the net on
the play, knocking Seaforth
goaltender Tim Swan on his back,
and had Robb's shot come a split
second later it would have been
disallowed and the Irish would have
been booked for goaltender
interference. '
The Cents' defence did alltheir
scoring. Chad Ramer put Seaforth
in the lead just past the middle of
the opening period, but a mental
'mistake cost the-Centenaires. dearly
with a mere five seconds left in the
TNI NUNON EXPOSITOR, Norsk 1, 1111111-11
when a Seaforth defenceman
cleared the puck into his own slot
and an unmarked Criel, "Johnny -
on -the spot" so far this series, who
equalized.
The Cents did the same thing in
the series opener Wednesday. They
let the Irish out of a comer and
couldn't finish or deliver a decisive
blow. With a comfy 2-0 cushion,
they couldn't keep the puck or Irish
on the boards in the Seaforth end of
the rink and allowed J. D.
Adamthwaite to score on the
powerplay with 38 seconds left in
the first period, shifting the
momentum and allowing Lucan
back into it.
With Lucan and the league's most
valuable player Greg Deprest
ejected from the game with a five-
minute checking from behind major
to start the second period,
Seaforth's powerplay once again
backfired and did the exact opposite
of what it is supposed to do -
allowing the Irish to equalize on a
shorthanded goal by Jeremy Jemec.
It is a problem that has perplexed
an impotent Seaforth powerplay all
season.
But the Centenaires shook it off
and took a 3-2 lead into the third
period. The Irish then netted two
unanswered tallies in the final 20
minutes to grab the crucial opening
game victory on their own ice. The
Cents pulled Swan for an extra
attacker for the final 90 seconds or
so, and came close to sending it
into overtime with at least three
quality chances but couldn't put it
in the net past Irish keeper Steve
Watson when they had to.
Steve Geiger paced the Seaforth
attack with a pair of goals. Ted
Sills got the other.
The top four' finishers in the
division were all in control of their
quarter -finals, all best -of -Sevens
going into Tuesday night's action.
First -place Port Stanley put away
eighth -place Mt. Brydges in four -
straight. Second place Lambeth led
seventh place Mitchell two games
to one, and third-place Exeter
scored 20 times in two games and
was having an easy time of it with
sixth-place Belmont, leading that
series 2-0: Lucan finished fourth
and Seaforth fifth.
Simplified Huron Expositor "Scoreboard" forms and drop boxes
are now available at the newspaper and prominently located in the
front lobby of the Seaforth and District Community Centres. This
will enable us to get the results from any game sheets, particularly
away games, that do not pass by Recreation Director Marty
Bedard's desk every Monday morning. These "Scoreboard" forms
don't require much time and effort from managers or coaches to
fill out. You don't have to be Shakespeare. Just the basics are
required - who, vyhat, when and where- legibly printed, first names
and last. Deadline for inclusion in the coming, week's paper is
Mondays' at noon. Late reports will not be used the following week.
Anybody with constructive comments or suggestions can, call Gregor
Campbell at the Expositor office at 527-0240.
