Society celebrates 150th anniversary
The Seaforth Agricultural Society
met for its 150th annual meeting
Saturday night at the fairgrounds.
Huron MPP Paul Klopp was one
of many area politicians in
attendance. He praised the local
society and said his government
feels the provincial government's
continued financial support of rural
agricultural societies such as
Seaforth's gives the "biggest bang
for our tax dollars".
"Without the agricultural
community and surrounding
townships the town of Seaforth
wouldn't be able to carry on the
way it has," added Seaforth mayor
Irwin Johnston.
Many past presidents of the
society and its homecraft division
were in attendance for both the
meal and meeting.
Brian Campbell returns as
president of the agricultural society
and Paul Dodds as vice-president.
Their terms continue until February
1996, when Dodds is scheduled to
replace Campbell, with directors
Jim Floyd and Cord Glenn next in
line.
Joanne Flanagan returns as
HomeCraft president, to be
succeeded by vice-president Marie
Hicknell at the same time.
Pat DeJong and Pat Melady of
Seaforth and arca are newcomers to
the society's list of directors.
Directors were told an audited
financial statement shows the
society raised $18,692 of revenue in
cxcess of expenses in 1994.
Revenue was $158,628, with grants
down approximately $4,000, over
expenses of $139,936. Operating
expenses increased over the

presentation of past fairs and
society events.
"If it wasn't for those who
entered a pound of butter in 1845,
a bacon hog in 1895, the rat tail
contest in 1945 or bought a Tractor

would not continue to grow," noted
HomeCraft President Flanagan.

While Queensway Nursing Home
residents continue to dodge all this
winter weather, the residents
enjoyed having the ladies from
Kippen United Church Women join
for a bingo program. These women
have donated their time to host
bingo for the month of February
and provided all the bingo prizes.
On Tuesday afternoon residents
watched a tape of Reverend
9
Verhoog who is currently doing
mission work. Following church
service residents gathered for a
monthly supper club. They enjoyed
a Hamburg Cheese Bake casserole
and peaches and ice cream for
dessert.
Thursday evening residents were
celebrating birthdays for February.
Those celebrating included Mabel
Chowen; Kay Hovius; Harold
Penhale; Marguerite Baker; Bruce
Cann; and Edna Waters. Ms. Kim
Souch, a local singer from Seaforth
provided the musical program for
the party.
Upcoming events: Thursday,
March 2 - 8 a.m. - Breakfast Club;
March 6 - 2 p.m, - Bingo sponsored
by Legion Auxiliary; March 7 - 7
p.m. Christian Reform Singers.
During lulls in the evening the
head table fired quiz questions
related to the annual fall fair at the
audience, such as: In what year was
the Seaforth Fall Fair cancelled and
why?
It was in 1899 when the society
was located in Harpuncey and its
buildings burnt down.
