It never rains but it pours:
Some 'different' shower themes
The bridal shower is a
favorite tradition that
occurs when a couple
announce their intention to
marry.
It is an occasion to
celebrate the forthcoming
nuptials and to provide gifts
to help the bride and groom
set up housekeeping.
It is also an important
social function so that
friends and family might
gather in a less formal
setting than the actual
wedding.
The question remains:
how can the shower be a
memorable event for all
concerned - especially the
honored guest - and still
remain a fun experience for
the hostess?
Perhaps some of these
suggestions for different
kinds of showers and tips on
how to organize the event
will help turn your showers
into sunshine.
AROUND THE CLOCK SHOWER
The idea is to state in
your invitation that each
guest should bring a gift the
couple might use at a
certain time of day.
Every invitation must
specify a different hour. If
you choose any of the
following hours, these
suggestions can be passed
along to guests who may
call you for ideas: 7 a.m. to 8
a.m. coffee maker, or a

SMILES AND MOMS SNOMER
Trim their first Christmas
tree with gifts of fancy bulbs
and other decorations.
Handmade and
personalized are best, but
shiny, satin and new are also
very acceptable. Then if all
guests add a treasured
ornament from their own
stockpile, it should fill out
the couple's first Christmas
tree rather nicely.
COLLECTIBLES SHOWER
If you know a couple who
suffer from acquisition
mania, indulge them with a
shower of their favorite
things.
Any addition to their
collection - old magazines
coins, dolls and
so on will be greatly
appreciated.
NERN ANS SPICE SHOWER
Ask everyone, by written
or casual invitation, to bring
a particular herb or spice.
Provide a decorated
rack or cabinet display at the
shower. It will make a
compact carry -home tote for
the guest of honor, with jars
neatly nestled inside.
!ENP-A-NANB SHOWER
Here is a shower that is
built around year-long help
for the couple.
Guests give coupons for
services, good anytime
during the first year of
wedded life, instead of the
usual presents.
The range is only limited
to the special talents and
expertise of your guests. .
Services might
include furniture making or
refinishing, budget planning,
yard work, appliance repair,
auto work, tax help, or
simply teaching the couple a
decorative or handy skill.
Examples of services which
coupons could provide are a
car wash, house sitting, or
window cleaning.
Purchase a file box, index
cards, and blank file guides.
Print or type the subject
headings on the guides in
alphabetical order (appliance
repair, auto work, budget
planning etc.)
This will be the start of a
'help in need' filing system
for the couple, so give them a
good supply of blank guides
to list their own contacts for
services your guests don't
apply. •
Decorate enough index
cards with a 'coupon' border
so you can send from one to
three to each guest, along
with the invitation. These
don't have to be fancy. A few
squiggly lines and words.
This helps the couple
immediately identify the
shower gift, and brings back
memories of helpful and
giving friends and family.
LET'S SET CANNES SHOWER
How about showering the
wedding couple with gifts
that come in cans? A can of
vegetables, a can of fruit or
anything similar. An electric
can opener could be the last
gift to be opened. It would be
purchased jointly by all
those attending.
POTLUCK SNOWS
Each guest brings a food
item in a serving container
that will become a gift for
the bride-to-be.
After the food is served,
everyone joins in to wash
and dry the gift pieces.
At gift time, each guest
tucks a gift card into the
appropriate gift, along with
the recipe that was used.
If additional gifts are
desired, baskets to hold the
serving dishes, hot pads,
serving utensils or a basic
recipe ingredient may be
added.
Planning the menu with
the guests can be done over
the phone or in person, but
should be done at least three
weeks in advance. Because of
this, invitations are rarely
sent.
A good activity for this
shower is the making of a
corsage for the bride from
ribbon and netting. Instead
of using flowers, just fasten
small unusual kitchen items
- such as a pastry brush,
melon bailer or strawberry
huller - to it.
As you present it to the
bride, ask her to explain -
with no coaching from the
audience - how each item is
used.
