Dutch community to honour Canadian contribution
BY AMY NEILANDS

their Canadian counterparts that
they do remember and are
thankful.
This May, celebrations will take
place all over the world as many
will commemorate the end of the
Second World War. The Dutch
have a special reason for
celebrating. It was 50 years ago
that the Canadian troops liberated
the Netherlands from German
occupation and the Dutch of

Huron County want to say thank
you once again.
The Dutch community of Huron
County have been busy geuing
ready for celebrations that will
take place in May. But the centre
of the celebrations will be a 13
foot high Dutch Memorial Foun-
tain in Goderich. This will be the
third fountain built at the Dutch
Liberation Memorial Park at the
comer of Hamilton and Victoria
Street in Goderich.
In 1970, a fountain was
presented to the Town of
Goderich to commemorate the
25th anniversary of the liberation
T H E
of Holland. In 1985, the fountain
was replaced with a new, larger
one in commemoration of the 40th
anniversary of the liberation. Now
in 1995, the Dutch Canadian
community want to say thank you
once again and are in the midst of
replacing the old fountain.
"We want to make this one
much more substantial to show
Canadians that we do remember,"
said Kase Vanden Heuvel, chair-
man of the committee organizing
the celebration plans. The commit-
tee held a public meeting at the
Clinton Legion on Feb. 15 to
address how the celebration plans
were going.
The fountain, which is expected
to be completed and erected at the
location in Goderich by mid-
March, will "consist of a circular,
slightly dished concrete pad with
a central water jet. Surrounding
this will be five tall figures made
of welded Metal. These figures
will express two images; the five
petals or points of a tulip, an
emblem of Holland, and also a
circle of people with outstretched
arms and joining hands," as stated
in information provided by the
committee.
"We do want to tell the
Canadian veterans that the Dutch
community does remember,
especially the veterans in Huron
County," said Vanden Heuvel.
The committee, while organizing
the celebration, has been very
persistent in trying to get a mem-
ber of the Dutch Royal House to
be present during the ceremonies
in Goderich. Princess Margriet
and her husband Pieter Van Vol-
lenhoven are scheduled to visit
Canada from May 17 to 22 and
the committee hopes Goderich
will be one of her scheduled
stops.
"We are trying very hard to get
royalty to visit our ceremony,"
said Vanden Heuvel. The group
has heard no answer yet.
"Don't give up," said Dutch
Vice Consolate Dr. Richard D.
Ter Vrugt who auended the
meeting in Clinton. "I am
impressed by the tenacity and
persistence your community has
Shown in trying to get someone
from the Royal House to visit.
"We owe a lot to our Canadian
counterparts. You were liberated
and it is time again to say thank
you very much," the Vice Con-
solate added.
