What would Seaforth be like
without fall fairs, livestock shows
and the Round House?
It would be like Seaforth without
the Seaforth Agricultural Society.
1995 is the year of the Seafc
Homecoming. It is also the I: t `
anniversary of one of Seaforth s
most important institutions, th,;
agricultural society.
Current president Brian Campbell
says the Agricultural Society tries
to bring rural and urban together.
"Our role is to promote agricul-
ture and let people know of the
ongoing changes in agriculture,
whether it be a display of no -till
equipment at the fair or an update
on new seed strains," he said. "Our
role is let the future farmers show
at the fair."
The organization has come a long
way since its beginnings when its
only focus was the Fall Fair.
Today the group of volunteers
stages a number of events including
the Home and Garden Show; the
Tractor Elimination Draw; Beef and
Pork Carcass Auctions; the Toy,
Doll and Craft Show; Tractor and
Truck Pulls and the Fall Fair.
"The tractor draw really draws a
lot of interest, we have ticket sales
from all across Canada," said Brian
Campbell, president of the Society.
The Agricultural Society erected
a new show barn in 1989 and built
a hall with washroom and kitchen
in 1992.
The Agricultural Society will be
holding its annual meeting on Sat -
:Jay, Feb. 25. The Society will be
%t 'coining past presidents, secre-
taries and treasurers to the function.
The organization is seeking to
Lind memorabilia (such as photos)
about the group's past to incorpor-
ate into the programme. If you have
items of interest contact Brian
Campbell at 527-1687.
There are certainly some interest-
ing anecdotes about the group's
150 -year history. For instance,
when rats were once a major prob-
lem there was a prize for the most
rat tails brought in.
When formed in Harpurhey, the
organization was first known as the
Harpurhey Agriculture Society.
Later, it became the Tuckersmith
Uranch Agriculture Society.
The Seaforth Agricultural Society
has helped develop a place for
Seaforth as an agricultural centre in
Huron. Its livestock shows bring in
exhibitors who sometimes stay
overnight and contribute to the local
economy.
During the 1995 Homecoming
celebrations (August 3-6) the Agri-
cultural Society will work with the
Homecoming Committee to stage a
Saturday evening dance and two
breakfasts.
The Agricultural Society is run
with volunteers and has a full slate
of 19 directors. Help is stilt wel-
come, however.
"We have what we need but
we're always looking for more,"
said president Brian Campbell.
