Lack of volunteers threatens junior hockey in
The Seaforth Centenaries Junior
"D"evelopment Hockey Club will
cease or suspend operations by
April 15 unless new blood can be
found to operate the team for the
1995-96 season, according to
general manager Gregor Campbell.
At least five of its 11 -member
executive, including the general
manager, have indicated they will
not be back next season because
they are either weary of it all or
moving elsewhere, and team has
been through two trainers and two
assistant coaches so far this season
and will be operating without either
by the middle of this month, in
contravention of Ontario Hockey
Association regulations that require
members to have officially -certified
personnel in both positions.
The Centenaires asked the OHA
for special assistance to help solve
its problems behind the bench late
last week, and the local junior
hockey club's executive meets
tonight (Wednesday) to discuss,
among other things, how to go
about attacking these problems.
The 21 -year-old franchise is now
also financially in the red for the
first time since 1990-91, in the
midst of sponsor cutbacks and
increasing costs, expected to rise
dramatically with new liability
insurance rates next season.
The OHA allows teams to
suspend operations with permission
for a up to two seasons if they
apply by April 15. New franchises
and teams that officially cease
operations, without taking
advantage of this rule, and then
decide to come back arc required to
pay a $5,000 new franchise fee on
top of their bond and other standard
regular and seasonal OHA entrance
fees.
The hockey club advertises for
volunteers before every annual
meeting, regularly held in late April
or early May, but has had limited
success attracting new blood. It has
advertised for certified trainers in
six newspapers the past three
seasons and not received a single
response for that paid position, says
Campbell. The executive scoured
around and found some local
trainers but one left for a job in
British Columbia late last season
and the other leaves soon for a
nursing job in Louisiana.
One assistant coach was let go at
the end of November, and the other
left several weeks ago to assume a
head coaching position in Listowel.
Centenaries general manager
Campbell terms the team's troubles
as a `crisis of commitment".
"Talk is cheap and critics are easy
Cents have on -ice troubles too
A long layoff didn't do the
Scaforth Centenaires a lot of good.
They got smoked twice last week.
The•Mitchell Hawks beat them 6-1
Friday night, in front of their
largest crowd at the Scaforth and
District Community Centres this
season, and the Irish Six similarly
embarrassed them 8-1 at Lucan last
Wednesday, Seaforth's first start
since Jet). 22.
A genie at Parkhill against the
North Middlesex Stars was
postponed because of the weather
Saturday night.
Miraculously, the Centenaires,
now at an even .500 with a 17-17-3
record, still cling to a share of
fourth place in the nine -team
Western Division of the Ontario
Hockey Association's Junior
"D"evelopment League. But that
(night not last long. Belmont, also
tied for fourth has a game in hand,
as does fifth -place Lucan, now only
one point back of both, so the Cents
could tumble to sixth in a blink if
they don't soon pull up their socks.
They are in action again Friday
night against those same Hawks,
only th re h is in Mitchell this
ti av
Last Friday night the Centenaires
trailed 3-0 six minutes into the
game, as the Hawks controlled the
point in the Seaforth zone and had
the locals running around
wondering what hit them.
It was seventh -place Mitchell's
fourth win in their past five games,
and their first win in four tries
against Seaforth this season. All-
Star goaltendcr Darcy Ballantyne
appears to be returning to form and
well recovered from a pre -season
car accident that threatened his
hockey future, although Seaforth
didn't really make him work for the
win, directing only nine shots his
way in the first two periods.
Josh Little was the only Scaforth
shooter to find the range, early in
the second period.
Dave Nahrgang started the game
in the Centenaires' net and was
replaced by Tim Swan after
Mitchell's third goal.
Wednesday night it was the other
way around. Swan started but was
replaced by Nahrgang after Lucan's
third goal at 14:36 of the opening
period. But unlike Friday, the Cents

"Scoreboard" is unavailable for this week's edition of the paper.
We will include the past week's results at the end of "Scoreboard"
in next week's edition of the paper.
Simplified Huron Expositor "Scoreboard" forms and drop boxes
are available at the newspaper and prominently located in the front
lobby of the Seaforth and District Community Centres. This will
enable us to get the results from any game sheets, particularly away
games, that do not pass by Recreation Director Marty Bedard's
desk every Monday morning. These "Scoreboard" forms don't
require much time and effort from managers or coaches to fill out.
You don't have to be Shakespeare. Just the basics are required -
who, what, when and where- legibly printed, first names and last.
Deadline for inclusion in the coming week's paper is Mondays at
noon. Late reports will not be used the following week. Anybody
with constructive comments or suggestions can call Gregor
Campbell at the Expositor office at 527-0240.

the second period and the third
turned into a bit of a Pier 6 brawl.
Jason Henderson scored the lone
Seaforth goal.
Steve Geiger left Wednesday's
game early after bruising a knee
badly, and played with a brace
Friday. The Mitchell game also
marked the return of Ted Sills to
the Seaforth lineup, his first time on
skates since November. About the
only good news the Centenaires got
all week was that local sniper Jason
Murray got the cast off the wrist he
broke just before Christmas, and
may return to the lineup shortly.

to come by," he says. Local
volunteers who are willing to get
their hands dirty and actually spend
time and make Seaforth's junior
hockey club a priority are fewer
and far between. It has been three
seasons since any member of the
Cents' executive had a son playing
for the team, the manager adds, and
current executive members
volunteer and continue to do so
because of their love of the sport
and Seaforth's rich junior hockey
heritage.
Four former Centenaires have
ended up being drafted by the
National Hockey League.
He adds crowds have been the
best in years this season and
individuals and the local business
community continue to be
extremely supportive, but there is a
limit "which we have probably
reached on how many times you
can go to the well" and manage an
operation of this size in small rural
communities, and a diminished
executive compounds the problem

of tundraising with costs
continually rising.
The club's operational expenses,
roughly $60,000 last season, are
about standard for successful OHA
Junior "D"evelopment and C clubs
in isolated rural communities,
according to the general manager.
He adds Seaforth's problems
seem to be following the same
pattern that led to the demise of a
senior club in town and junior
franchises in Clinton and Goderich
in the last decade.
Minor hockey in Clinton also
dramatically deteriorated after its
junior club folded, the local
manager says, to the point where
the Clinton minor system seriously
Seaforth
considered disbanding earlier this
season.
"Fewer and fewer people end up
doing more and more of the work
until the enthusiasm just wears
thin," Campbell says. "When the
clubs fold they don't come back.
Sooner or later you have to admit
to yourself if the local commitment
isn't there it isn't there, and get on
with your life."
The last Seaforth hockey club to
go under was the senior Seahawks
who forfeited their bond then
packed it in after only four players
showed up for a game in Wellesley
in 1990.
