Steckle should stick to guns: McGavin
by Pat Livingston
Neil McGavin of Walton was
acclaimed president of the Huron -
Bruce Federal Liberal Association
last week. About 100 members of
the riding met in Lucknow for the
annual meeting.
"It's an honour to be your presi-
dent," said McGavin. "I've never
been real involved in politics; my
dad was a few years ago andI kind
of thought it got to be a dirty word
there for a while."
"I've gained a lot of respect for
Paul (Steckle)," added McGavin.
He had all of the implement dealers
together and I think that's been the
first time we've ever had a member
draw us all together and have us all
speak as to what our problems
were.
"Then he had a rural caucus and
we got to speak about a beef we've
got with one company that's throw-
ing a pretty heavy shoulder against
us. Whether it was just politics...we
really thought we were listened to,"
he said. "We got a lot of people
from all over Canada listening and
it turned out they were all having
the same experiences."
"For your guns - stick to your
guns," McGavin said to Steckle,
Huron -Bruce MP. "I don't want to
give up ours - they've been around
the family for a long time. All we
use them for is shooting
groundhogs," said McGavin, "but if
I was that old jeweller in
Palmerston I think I'd pull them out
too...The only mistake he maybe
made - he didn't hit them. So Paul,
stick to your guns," reiterated
McGavin.
"The corporal punishment - I had
a gentleman in our business and he
told me a friend of his had the

lashes years ago and said he'd do
anything to never have them again."
McGavin said it taught the man,
who believed he would be in prison
today if he hadn't had the lashes, a
lesson.
"But maybe there's psychiatrists
and other people who can get things
across that's better. My dad used to
have a way, and that was on the toe
of his boot and told me how to do
things," said McGavin.
"I've got quite attached to Paul
and I think I'd like him to stick to
his thoughts and be outspoken like
he is," McGavin said.
Of the six elected executive posi-
tions to be filled only one is from
the northern end of the riding,
Jacqueline MacGillivray of Saugeen
Township.
All positions were filled by accla-
mation. Dave Johnston of Bayfield
will serve as fust vice president;
MacGillivray as second vice; Ruth
Gingerich of RR 2 Zurich, as treas-
urer; Laurene Maloney of Seaforth
as general secretary and Cyril
Gingerich of Zurich as membership
secretary. Gingerich held that posi-
tion last year as well. John Gates,
of RR 5 Kincardine is past presi-
dent.
Only two of the three adult direc-
tor positions were filled: Jack
Riddell of Hay Township and
Mervyn Erb of Brumfield. The
remaining director must be a
female.
Greg McClinchey of Londesboro
is the male youth director. The
executive is empowered to select a
female for the other youth director.
The riding is eligible to send 18
delegates to the Ontario convention
in late February, but at the meeting
only three people indicated any
interest in doing so.
"We have a vital organization
here that needs to be strengthened
with new members, said Paul
Steckle, MP, who was the guest
spe"1 feel particularly complimented
by the fact that over the past num-
ber of months there has been tre-
mendous support of many of the
initiatives I have taken. I realize
that as a member of Parliament,
from time to time, we have to take
positions that don't necessarily
reflect the wishes of all constitu-
ems. But I believe when I was
elected...I made a commitment to
you people. Firstly that if I was
nominated, I would win the elec-
tion. ...I also made a commitment
that if I was elected I would serve
you with honest, integrity and
respect of the constituents who I
represent. I have continued and I
am striving to do that."
Steckle reviewed the various
committees and issues he has been
involved with since being elected.
He reaffirmed his commitment to
Huron -Bruce, saying, "I'm here to
hear the people of this riding..."

Both women enjoyed it and Mary

pass an afternoon. Residents
enjoyed watching "A Winner Never
Quits."
January church services with Rev.
Cook, Rev. Sloan and Rev.
