St. Joseph's Council 7645 in Clinton sponsored the local com- petition at St. Joseph's Roman Sergeant FROM THE PAGES OF THE HURON EXPOSITOR, FEBRUARY 8, 1895 John Landsborough of Seaforth has purchased over 5,000 fence posts in the locality of Brussels. * * * On Monday evening, Mr. John Short, who recently retired from farming and became a resident of Hensall, was very pleasantly sur- prised on the occasion of his 74th birthday, by having all his sons and daughters, together with their wives and husbands, who lived within bounds, come in the way of a sur- prise party, and spent the evening in the old home. * * * Mr. Osbert H. Kerslake and his bride have sealed down on their farm on the 1 1 th concession. * * * On Tuesday morning, at SL James' Catholic Church in this town, Miss Kate Devereaux, daugh- ter of Mr. Robert Devereaux, of 'Tuckersmith, and Mr. W. Burns, of Logan township, Perth county, were made man and wife by Rev. Father Kennedy, in the presence of a large concourse of friends. * * * A gentleman in Egmondville possesses a bound volume of the popular magazine, Leisure Hour, for 1891, which contains a picture representing five generations. Noth- ing perhaps,, uncommon, but the peculiarity lies in the circumstance that the group represents the grand- mother, aunt and cousins of the writer of these notes, who has a good photograph of them taken several years ago, the eldest at that time being 94 and the youngest six months, each named Mary. Andrea Vanderloo was the 10 - year -old girls' champion with a score of 3-15 and Stellios Gougoulias was the winner of the 10 -year-old boys' division with a score of 5-15. In the 11 -year-old bracket of the competition there was no girl participant and Chris Kaastra was the boys' champion with a score of 10-15. Twelve -year-old winners in the girls' and boys' division were Emily Slotegraaf with a score of 6-15 and Rick VanSteelandt with a score of 9-15. The 13 -year-old girls' division was won by Colleen Renkema with a score of 7-15 and the boys' division was won by Mark Cox with a score of 8-15. The fourteen -year-old champion in the boys' category was Mark McLachlan with a score of 8-15. Last year more than 188,000 girls and boys participated in 3,203 local com- petitions. Hicks, MPP for South Huron, has been appointed party whip by the UFO members -elect of the Ontario Legislature. * * * A rink of curlers composed of W. E. Southgate, K. McLean, G. A. Sills and T. Johnston were in St. Thomas on Monday playing for the Just Wright Challenge Trophy, but did not succeed in lifting it. * * * Mr. Joseph Eckart, of Kitchener, and Miss Bessie Jordan, of Dublin, spent the weekend with friends in town. * * * Mr. W. J. Finnigan has purchased the old Collie property in Egmondville. * * * R. McFadzean and J. McArthur have gone to Guelph for a short course on the management of trac- tors. FEBRUARY 9, 1945 Sgt. John Joseph Holland, Seaforth, was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry and distin- guished conduct during the Caen battle. * * * The Expositor is indebted to Mr. David McConnell, of Dublin, for two very interesting souvenirs of Dublin activities of the long ago. One is an invitation to the celebra- tion that was held in the village on the occasion of its incorporation, when the name was changed from Carronbrook to Dublin. Mrs. T. W. Butt, of Kippen, has received several letters recently from her son, Lance -Cpl. (Curly) Somers, who is with the Eighth Army in Italy, and he wishes to thank the Seaforth Branch of the Canadian Legion, the Overseas Box Committee and Northside United Church for thesmokers and boxes sent at Christmas time. * * * Mr. and Mrs. John Passmore, of Hensall, received official word Sunday that their youngest son, Pilot Officer Gerald (Mike) Passmore, was reported missing and presumed killed in air activities over enemy territory. Pilot Officer Passmore is 21 years of age, enlisted in 1941 and received his wings at Uplands and his training at Patricia Bay, Vancouver Island and was stationed at Alaska when he left for overseas in June, 1944. * * * R. B. Holmes of the Public Utility Commission staff had both bones of his left leg broken. While doing some electrical work at the home of J. J. Cleary, he slipped and fell while going downstairs. FEBRUARY 5, 1970 Tuckersmith Township Council members conducted their business by the dim light of one lonely, small, white candle on Tuesday night. Their meeting at Huron Cen- tennial School, Brucefield had only begun at eight o'clock when the school was plunged into darkness. About ten minutes later a janitor arrived with the candle. * * * Some 50 teenagers attended a youth meeting Sunday afternoon in the St. Patrick's School Auditorium. Reverend Father Durand, Sister Shirley, Mary Margaret Rowland and Bonnie Krauskopf chaired the meeting. Those nominated were Mary Kelly, Jo -Ann Van Bergen, Mary Ann O'Rourke, Lou Ann Rowland, Christine Delaney, Danny O'Rourke, Ron Feeney, Ed.
