VanBakel weighs options
continued from page nine
"He gets the ice time because he
deserves it," Uniac said. "I don't
put guys on the ice unless they
deserve it. He's deserved every-
thing he's got."
The Grade I I student at St.
Michael Catholic Secondary
School in Stratford has suddenly
found himself with many open
doors --a precarious situation to be
in six weeks after his 16th birth-
day. Uniac feels he can make the
jump to the Ontario Hockey
League (OHL) next season --the
veteran coach and longtime OHL
scout says there's no question he'll
get drafted this summer --or
whether to continue achieving his
75-80 per cent average and pursue
a U.S. scholarship.
Greg hasn't decided which
avenue he'll take.
"There's lots of decisions to he
made," he said. "We'll have to
see....hut whatever happens, hap-
pens."
Van Bakel will write his SATs in
May. and will await the OHL
entry draft in June. He hopes by
then to have some sort of idea
what his future plans are.
"It all depends on where I get
drafted too, 1 guess," he said,
adding that a local team is, for the
moment anyway, his most attrac-
tive scenario.
Uniac said the only drawback at
the moment is Van Bakel's size,
but if he fills out and continues to
work hard, "he might be able to
play junior 'A' next year.
"He's going to get drafted on his
toughness and the way he's
played, and it'll be up to him to go
up there and prove it," he said. "If
he doesn't play Jr. 'A' he's going to
be a hell of a Jr. 'B' player."
Not only has Van Bakel been
happy with his -progress on a per
sonal level --"I've learned so much
since the start of the year," he
says --the team is one of the lead-
ers in the highly -competitive
Midwestern Jr. B League. The
Lincolns lost 8-5 to St. Thomas
last week (Van Bakel scored once
and assisted on another), extend-
ing their current losing string to
four games, but the club is still a
viable contender.
Quite simply, he's used to win-
ning. Last year, Van Bakel led the
Mitchell Bantams to the OMHA
'CC' championship --his second in
three years --and also chipped in
with the OHA Junior
Development Mitchell Hawks,
who successfully defended their
provincial crown.
"We're in a bit of a downside
right now, but we'll just have to
have a good all-around effort from
everybody when the playoffs start.
You never know what's going to
happen in the playoffs."
Indeed, the playoffs are another
story --as is the latest chapter in the
story of Greg Van Bakel.

WINTHROP 1
RED RUSTLERS 0
Winthrop scores a flukie goal
with only five minutes remaining in
the second half of the game by
Steve Knight, assistiAnce from Bruce
Pearn and Greg Clark. Red
Rustlers' goalie Tim Cumming
played outstandingly throughout the
whole game with minimum equip-
ment. He braved the goal tending
and made awesome saves. His
fellow teammates also went over-
board helping to keep the score at a
low margin. Great game, guys.
PARR LINE 1 - ROYALS 0
Parr Line seemed to be having
difficulty on goal scoring until wee
Ed Salverda winds up with a big
shot and scores a quick relief goal,
help came from Mark Krahn. The
Royals had plenty of chances on
scoring but to get the right wrist
action to put the ball in on those
empty nets. Mr. Dearing also
deprived Parr Line men of many
chances on goal scoring. Great
game by both teams.
DUMPERS 6 - RAIDERS 0
Raiders played a good defensive
game to keep the score in the single
digit margin this time. However the
Dumpers Don Henderson gathered
up a hat trick tonight. One to Oary
Dill and a couple to Dale Kennedy
for assists. W. Finlayson nabs a
couple of sure goals also

hikes up the ice and also seeks out
the goal range and scores, Hcy! Not
far behind is Cindy Carter and
Heidi Elliott contributing to a goal
each, lots of help from Bonnie
O'Reilly, Kuss, Chipper and Bev
Shea.
WINTHROP 3 - SOCIALITES 0
Socialites' esteem was running
low in the second half as the goals
were soon accumulated by
Winthrop's Tammy Nash for a
couple and smoothie Donna Arts.
Lots of assistance came from Barb
Elliott, Deb Murray, Hilda Young
and Tammy Kennedy.
GRADS 3 - EASY RIDERS 0
Easy Riders were hurtin' for
players and also hurtin' for goals in
this game. But the Grads Chris
Goris, Al Wynja and Mac O'Nicl
weren't shy about scoring goals.
Back up help came from Martin
Wynja and Tony Van Den Heuvcl.
