Top magic show to hit area

A production billed as "Canada's
largest illusion show" is coming to
Seaforth.
Illusionist Claude Haggerty will
be bringing seven or eight tons of
equipment and at least two of his
'Big Cats' for the show, which is a
fundraiser for Seaforth District High
School. The magician performs
such optical illusions as sawing a
person in half and making someone
levitate.
The Dunville, Ontario native is
now based in Niagara Falls where
he was well-known for making a
600-1b., fifteen -foot tall elephant
disappear as one of his illusions. He
has been a busy man, working full-
time in the magic biz since 1981.
"We're still young, still new,
building a name," he said. "We're
definitely on to something."
The 35 -year-old illusionist first
began displaying his interest in
magic when he was 12 years old.
Haggerty stunned his family when
as a young man he took all his
college money and purchased the
equipment for a large illusion.
"My parents were not too
impressed," he recalls. "They said,
`You've lost your head'...magic's
okay for a• hobby but you can't
expect to do it for a living."
Haggerty's family members soon
changed their minds when he was
booked for show after show and
was selected from 2,000 different
acts who had auditioned to open
Alberta's giant West Edmonton
Mall.
There is `zero' danger posed by
the big cats (such as lions and
tigers) which he employs in the act,
says Haggerty. They have been a
feature of the routine for almost 14
years.
"We're very cautious when we're
performing," he said. "All the illu-
sions happen in a closed area."
Magic is not a dying art, says
Haggerty. In fact, like country
music, it is attracting a new audi-
ence it never had before.
"It's more popular now than it
ever has been," he said.

IT'S AN ILLUSION - Magician Claude
reaching through one of his assistants
Clinton, is coming to Seaforth.
Magicians like David Copperfield
have turned magic and illusion into
a multi-million dollar business.
Haggerty says both the country
music and magic industries started
to take pages out of the rock and
roll notebook. They looked to the
glamour and glitz of high-powered
rock shows and began to incorpor-
ate their successful showmanship.
Haggerty says that he is not in the
same league as David Copperfield
but that no one in Canada comes
closer and he probably has more
equipment with his show. He also
says that for the comparatively low
ticket prices his show gives excel-
lent magic value for the money.
The young magician says his act
is composed of clever tricks and
puzzles. In an age when "there

front of students) and 7:00 p.m
(open to the public) on Feb. 3. The

ing four elementary schools for a
preview show on Jan. 31. The
schools are St. Patrick's in Dublin, .
St. Co)umban School, Seaforth
Public School and St. James School
in Seaforth.
The magic show sold out last year

Secondary School in Clinton.
