PRICE: In loving memory of John Price
who passed away one year ago, Jan.
25, 1994.
A thousand times we needed you.
A thousand times we've cried,
If our love could have saved you,
You never would have died.
When we are sad and lonely,
And everything goes wrong,
We seem to hear you whisper,
Cheer up and carry on.
We've learned with silent effort,
To hide the tears that start,
But cannot help the longing,
That lies within our hearts.
If all the world were ours to give,
We'd give it all and more,
To see your loving face again,
Come walking through the door.
Lovingly remembered and sadly missed
by his wife Ann and sons Myles and
Keith, Brian and Marlene and 3
grandchildren. 46-04-1

Teachers use tax
form for supplies
they purchase
BY MONA IRWIN
for The Huron Expositor
Huron County teachers who buy
their own classroom supplies may
now ask the board for a Revenue
Canada forth to deduct the cost of
the supplies from their personal
income tax - if the board has not
reimbursed them.
Trustees voted at the Jan. 9 meet-
ing to approve the use of T-2200
Revenue Canada forms. The defini-
tion of what's deductible and what
isn't is determined by Revenue
Canada, not by the board. If the
board reimburses the teacher, how-
ever, the purchase is now seen as
the board's expense, rather than the
teacher's.
But Goderich trustee Norman
Pickell says it's not unusual for
teachers to buy small items for the
classroom or their students.
"They may be down in London or
in a store somewhere, and they'll
see something and say, 'Hey,
wouldn't that be great in my
classroom'," said Pickell. "If they
want to buy it and charge the board
for it, they have to get board appro-
val first
"But if they just want to buy it
out of their own pocket, and not be
reimbursed, they can do it."
It may be "regular, routine, stuff,
because the supplies budget is just
so tight," he said. Or it may be
something to decorate the classroom
with - posters, perhaps - or small
items - such as decorative erasers or
pins - to hand out as `Student of the
Week' prizes, he added.
"They might go and buy 40 of
those at a buck apiece or two bucks
apiece - they don't come to the
board and say, 'Hey, I want my
money back," Pickell said.
"All they're asking by this is
'Can I get an income tax deduction
for having bought this?" And I
don't see any problem with that,"
he said. "If they're good enough
and conscientious enough to buy
these little things with their own
money, let them have the deduction.
The Income Tax Act allows for..`;
that."
At the Jan. 9 meeting, Janet
Baird -Jackson, the board business
administrator, said principals will
counter -sign the forms, but will not
fill in the dollar amount or double-
check receipts.
"We'll leave that between the
individual taxpayer and Revenue
Canada," she said.
Principals will counter -sign the
forms as the board's agent to con-
firm that it is implied that teachers
will buy certain supplies from time
to time, said director of education
Paul Carroll.
