Some Huron areas low in forest
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL

Two hundred years ago it was
mostly forest but there are now
areas of Huron County where
forestation is much less than
recommended by environmentalists.
Steve Harburn, a forestry
technician with the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation Authority,
says a minimum of eight per cent
forestation is recognized as
"healthy" by environmentalists, and
many areas in Stephen, Usbome
and Forest Townships are down to
three per cent where ABCA is
concentrating efforts to again up the
percentage, which in tum will
improve these areas as a wildlife
habitat.
But landowners in this neck of
the woods know the value of their
trees, which go well beyond the
benefits for birds and animals.
Harburn estimates in the
neighborhood of 50 per cent of the
landowners in Huron County
around the Seaforth area have taken
advantage of the authority's various
tree planting programs in the past.
He adds even more orders would be
nice, now is the time to order for
spring plantings and it is a case of
"first come first served" although
lots of trees and many varieties are
available.
The program, often involving a 50
per cent grant, is more popular with
some than others, for instance Gary
Van Loon who planted 11,000
seedlings for shelter belts around
his Dublin -area properties in the
early 1980s, and continues to be a
strong supporter of ABCA and its
programs, even going so far as to
till his tows of young trees.
Harburn says, among its,other
programs, ABCA plants a wide

mobility bus
Only $4500 more has to be
raised so the Central Huron
Mobility Service (CHuMS) can
place the order for a mobility
bus, reports Bev Brown,
Fundraising Chairperson.
"Everyone has been
wonderfully supportive," said
Brown. "Almost every service
club from Dublin to Auburn has
made a substantial donation
towards the bus. Several private
citizens have also sent
contributions. Now the
businesses arc getting involved
and have pushed the fundraising
account to over $35,500 this past
week."
The CHuMS Board of
Directors hopes to raise $40,000
by Feb. 1 so that the mobility
bus can be ordered. Delivery can
take as long as 10 to 18 weeks.
Anyone wishing to help buy
the bus can send a cheque to

variety of seedlings on private plots
from one to five acres, anything
bigger is the responsibility of the
Ministry of Natural Resources.
The advantages of planting trees
on or around your land are
numerous, says the authority's
forestry technician; including
slowing down wind erosion thereby
improving water quality, preserving
topsoil on highly erosive flood
plains, crop protection and
increasing yields. Planting small
plantations on land marginal to
begin with can also lead to future
profits from wood products.
In addition, trees can improve the
look of rural properties and act as
snow fences or windbreaks for
livestock or homes, lowering
heating costs.
ABCA will design and manage
plantings if the property owner
requires it. Harburn estimates the
authority plants about 150,000
seedlings every season, and
landowners order then plant , an
additional 150,000 within the
watershed.
April is the busiest month in this
business with larger stock generally
lifted the first week of that month,
seedlings lifted a couple of weeks
later and plantings from mid-April
to mid-May. ABCA also makes
available its tree planters for rent.
Harburn says governments started
reforestation in the early years of
this century because they
recognized too many trees, of what
in the their recent past had been
almost total forest, had been cut
down. The rows of ancient maples
along many area concessions date
from this time, most of which are
now rotten in the middle and will
become history in the next half -
decade if ice storms don't get to
them sooner, according to Harburn.
