'dad, Carter Kerslake, who passed away
January 23, 1994.
In a place not far from me,
Where I often go,
Lies one I loved so dearly,
Who left one year ago.
His resting place I visit,
Put flowers there with care,
But no one knows the heartache,
As I turn and leave him there.
You are always in my mind,
No matter what I do,
All the time within my heart,
There are thoughts of you, Dad.
I miss you and love you, Brenda. 46-

SWAN seeks to end
woman abuse in Huron
BY ARLENE TIMMINS
SWAN (Stop Woman Abuse
Now) is a coordinating committee
of over 30 interested organizations
and individuals committed to work-
ing cooperatively to reduce, prevent
and eliminate all forms of woman
abuse in Huron County and beyond.
The group formed in October, I990
and since then has met on the firsi
Friday of every month. These meet-
ings are open to anyone who wishes
to attend and who agrees with the
goals and service principles guiding
the organization. Some of these
goals and guiding principles are:
• the safety of women and
children is the fundamental priority
in any intervention to eliminate
abuse.
• service delivery must extend
beyond traditional forms of inter-
vention to include advocacy and
political change.
• all members of SWAN commit
to work in a manner which is
collaborative and coordinated with
other service.
• women's choices and expertise
related to their own situations must
be respected. At the same time,
service workers have the responsi-
bility to (a) create conditions
where a woman is given an oppor-
tunity to make informed choices
and (b) create reasonably bound-
aries and safety tlrovisions,
• services must recognize abuse as
criminal activity and promote the
application of the full measures of
the law against the perpetrator.
SWAN's primary goalsare
related to training, public education
and lobbying to ensure that institu-
tions at all Levels are sensitive to
the needs of women and children
who have experienced abuse. To
that end, the group has been
involved in many activities. One
activity involved working with the
Women's Shelter and Counselling
Services of Huron to establish
Women's Resource Centres in
Seaforth and Wingham. These
centre provide the community with
information as to a wide range of
services available in Huron County
as well as providing programming
to meet the needs of the women
and children in those communities.
SWAN's training committee has
recently worked with the Ministry
of the Solicitor General and Correc-
tional Services in providing two
days of training to police officers in
Huron County. The group has
elementary and separate school
systems to educate students, staff
and teachers on the issues of viol-
ence against women and to develop
policies to address the issue. The
group has jointly sponsored the
Women Today the annual Take
Back the Night march, the Decem-
ber 6 Vigil remembering the
Montr6a1 Massacre and Interna-
tional Women's Day in March.
• 'The SWAN Report' is con-
tributed regularly to newspapers
in the area.
Iglooshelp beat "blahs"
at local children's centre
Everyone has been welcomed
back to the Seaforth Co-operative
Children's Centre after the Christ-
mas holiday. December was filled
with smells of shortbread and gin-
gerbread and Tots of sparkling dec-
orations on the tree. The children
enjoyed a skating Christmas party
which included a visit from Santa
Claus, face painting and sing -song
of all their newly -learned Christmas
songs.
The children's centre ended the
year with a visit to the Manor for a
Christmas sing son?.
Happy Birthday in December to
Kelly Coleman, Lindsay Hoegy,
Tanner Ward, Michael Prince,
Adam Bracckcr, Ian Murray and
Joshua Shea.
The snow arrived January 1, just
in time for the children's unit on
winter. On several of the very
snowy days when the children
were'nt able to go outside the
.centre brought the snow inside to
play with and observe.
The children have been making
igloos and lots of interesting snow
people. To take away the winter
'blahs' they had a beach
theme and pulled out summer
and sunglasses. Also in January the
centre welcomed the Health Unit to
talk to us on how to care for teeth.
Happy Birthday in January to
Kyle Forney, Brent Melady and
Bryce Carruthers.
