Music is fun in new local program
BY TIM CUMMING
Expositor Editor
Seaforth Co-operative Children's
Centre is the only facility of its
kind in Huron to offer a preschool
music course called the Sunrise
Program.
' The program is one of the Music
for Young Children courses and is
offered for children aged three to
four.
"People have just caught right on
to it," said Shirley Brooker, admin-
istrator of the Children's Centre. "It
certainly has helped our attendance
Thursday afternoons."
The program, which introduces
young children to such concepts as
the beat of music and playing
rhythm instruments, is conducted by
Lauri Greenwood, of the Goderich
arca (as well as by Mary Verbeme,
an Early Childhocxl Education
teacher).
Greenwood says the program
teaches more than just musical
`kills.
"They learn from the other kids
and they learn a lot of listening
skills," she said. A pamphlet pro-
moting the course says it helps
develop attention span, listening
awareness and fine motor skills.
Greenwood has been teaching
music privately for six years and
has been instructing the Music for
Young Children programs for about
a year.
She says the program allows
young children to harness their
energy and put it into music. There

are no tests.
"The beauty of it is there's no
pressure...it's their choice, if they
choose not to do it, they don't have
to," said Greenwood. The Goderich-
based instructor says the music
course allows children to have a
good time as they learn about
inusic. In the past some children
have resented such things as music
lessons because they're seen as
something that is forced on them.
"This is to teach them that music
can be a fun thing," she said. "They
come away liking music rather than
looking at it as a chore."
There are four music teachers in
the area who instruct the Music for
Young Children series of programs.
There arc two in Huron County
(Greenwood in the Goderich area
and one in Zurich) and two in Perth
County.
New milk shakes up dairy industry
A new milk product could be a
blessing for the dairy industry or
it could just hurt the good name
milk already has with most
consumers, according to different
voices in agri-business.
Auk Foods, which is Canada's
largest dairy with morc than
ti 1.24 billion in annual revenue,
i, launching a new product
called PurFiltre, billed as
uicro-fitiered ',milk.
Rival firm Beatrice sought to
have a judicial order preventing
Ault from claiming its new milk
\\ as purer than ordinary milk.
The chair of the Huron County
Milk Committee, Barry Elliott of
RR 1 Lucknow, recently
returned from the annual meet-
ing of the Ontario Milk Market-
ing Board. He said many people
are pleased to sec a firm adver-
tising milk.
-They're glad to sec a new
product coming out."
Elliott, however, echoes some
of the concerns with this new
product...that by advertising a
'imp' milk with longer shelf
life it will discredit the milk
products currently on the market.
the product, which is more
'Both milks are very good..." expensive than regular milk, has
lunger shelf lifc and a fresher
taste.
Some other dairy producers
.espond by saying that once this
new milk is opened it's the same
as other milk.
Currcnt milk products arc pure,
adds Elliott, who says that no
milk has additives to prolong
.helf life.
Many businesses in the
Seaforth arca are taking a wait-
and-see approach to stocking the
prtxluct.
"Both milks arc very good, the
other milk -is very low in
bacteria as well," said Elliott.
"I'ersonally, I wouldn't want to
xrr them advertising less
bacteria (in PurFiltre)."
Regular milk is already 99.3
per -cent pure after pasteuriz-
ation, Ault admits, but makes the
`92 times less bacteria' claim
because its microfiltered milk 'is
supposedly 999 -per -cent free of
bacteria. The company claims

without permission. Snowmobilers
arc also not allowed 10 drive on
sidewalks, are restricted to half the
speed limit of the roadway, and
must be out of town by midnight
until 6 a.m.
Police report
several incidents
Seaforth Police report this past
weekend they removed one driver
from behind the wheel of his car
who had been drinking. He was
issued a 12 -hour license suspension.
Last Thursday evening, Jan. 12,
police also report an area 12 -year-
old boy was struck by a minivan as
he attempted to cross Goderich
Street at the stoplights in dense fog.
The boy, who was taken to hospital
by ambulance but home the next
day, was attempting to cross from
the south sidewalk and the van was
eastbound. Police say it was
fortunate the boy did not receive
serious injury.
Last Tuesday, Jan. 10, a theft of
money was reported to local police.
The thief left town in a vehicle,
later stopped by Sebringville
Ontario Provincial Police. A young
offender was arrested and returned
to Seaforth. The money was
recovered.
No interest, ,
local committee
lets issue drop
Scaforth's Finance and General
Government Committee has decided
"to let sleeping dogs lie", and not
proceed with passing a bylaw as
recommended by the Ministry of
Municipal Affairs to regulate adult
entertainment facilities in town. The
committee discussed the pros and
cons but decided not to proceed
with a by-law at this time because
there have been no enquiries about
operating this type of, business in
Scaforth.
Deputy -Clerk Cathy Garrick has
since said a 1992 ammendment to
the Seaforth Zoning Bylaw states
"adult .entertainment parlours are
not permitted in the Town of
Seaforth.
A
Chief Claus said catching them
was the hard part, identifying them
under their plexi -glass helmets
wasn't much easier and it was just
a few snowmobilcrs who are
making it difficult for all.
Vice -Chair William Teall
suggested . making sure the public
knows the rules is "something we
can do before it becomes a
problem." Chair Steffler added she
liked to be positive about such
things so suggested "for the
enjoyment of all" somehow be
incorporated into the wording.
Stefflcr also suggested a police
presence would- be positive and
show support at the upcoming
public meeting considering a youth
drop-in centre.
The Board carried a policy
motion by Vice -Chair Tcall,
seconded by Bob Dinsmore, that
police officers in Seaforth only
trspass
attend inside the arena on request.
Chief Claus felt this might hamper
the public mingling required of
police work, but Board member
Dinsmore suggested the best time
for this would be between periods
when officers are. often not to be
found.
The Board passed the motion,
noting discretion might be the key
to implementing it.
