SPORTS
The won Expositor will be experimenting with a scoreboard fgpnat
in coming weeks in an attempt to upgrade its local sports coverage.
We are faced with a dilemma covering minor sport. Sport has always
been very popular and successful in this area, but if all of our local
teams were to submit detailed game reports it would leave little space
for anything else in our newspaper. Readership surveys tell us many
people feel we already have too much sports in our paper. But for
others, spons is all they care to read.
Sport is particularly important for the young, who these days are
ignoring newspapers in droves for the glamour of other media. These
are our readers of the future and we must become relevant to them to
survive.
It is felt that by going to a scoreboard format we can best balance
increased coverage with limited space requirements.
Easy to fill out game sheets for all minor sports will soon become
available at our office and at the Seaforth and District Community
Centres, and we will actively pursue up to date game sheets from team
managers.
This week's scoreboard is only a rough beginning. We will
experiment with different categories, for instance maybe outstanding
plays and goalkeepers, and assorted graphics in coming weeks to see
what we can come up with.
We urge managers filling out game sheets or scoreboard reports to
hand this week's results, win or lose, by Mondays at noon, for news it
isn't if it is two weeks old..We also urge those filling in reports to print
clearly, for facts and names properly spelled are the essence of all news,
sports or otherwise.
We also welcome any constructive suggestions or comments.
