and area from attending the
annual Hibbert New Year's

The New Year's Levee is a
popular attraction each year and
this year's theme was Hibbert
Century Farms, honouring those
farms which have been owned
by the same family for 100 years
Or more.

Hibbert Township will 'Mingle
and Mix in '96' when it holds its
Sesquicentennial Celebrations. A
book of Hibbert Township his-
tory will be published by the end
of this year to coincide with the
approaching anniversary celebra-
tions.
Perth County's Warden is
traditionally in attendance at the
Hibbert New Year's Levee and
appropriately Hibbert Reeve
Walter McKenzie, this year's
Warden, was able to do double -
duty.
CeSome history on Hibbert's
ntury Farms can be found in
the late Isabelle Campbell's
trilogy of Hibbert history books.
For instance, in A Hibbert
Review (1953) she recalled that
the Dow farm at Lot 4, Conces-
sion 11 was held by several
generations of Dows.
"William Dow was the first to
own it," she recalled. "He
married Mary Watt and came
from Lanark to this farm in
Hibbert...he died (there) in
1888.
She also recalls that Lot 19,
Concession 8, now belonging to
Cliff Miller, was first owned by
Duncan McMillan and later
James Norris. The first Miller to
purchase the site was 'Little'
Johnnie Miller and his wife
Lizzie Wordenand they raised a
family of 13, according to
Campbell's book.

Grant Bergsma,
newly -elected president of the
—Huron County Junior Farmers.
junior Farmers not
just for farmers, says
new president
The new President of Huron
County Junior Farmers wants
young people to know the group
is not primarily about farming.
"I think there's a major mis-
conception about what Junior
Farmers means," said Grant
Bergsma, 23. "It's a lot of fun,
it's a learning experience."
The Londesboro-area man was
elected President of the group on
Sunday, Dec. 4 at a meeting in
Seaforth. He would like the club
to hold more large-scale dances
for the young people of Huron.
Bergsma works for Vanden
Heuvel Construction in
Goderich. He is the son of Bruce
and Marie Bergsma of RR 1
Londesboro.
In 1995 the Huron County
Junior Farmers are hosting the
Zone Winter Games, planning a
leadership retreat for young
people and holding many other
social, sporting and community
betterment events.
Huron County may be the top
county in Ontario for agricultural
production. but Huron's Junior
Farmers club, at 35 members, is
relatively small.
"1 don't know why we don't
have a stronger club," said.
Bergsma. He says the organiz
anon has lots of good-time
events and "just about any kind
of sport you can play."
Junior Farmers is a social and
service club for.members aged
15-30. Anyone who is interested
in finding out more about the
club can contact President Grant
Bergsma at - 523-4364, Vice -
President Tim Cumming at 527-
0725 or Past President Fred Peel
at 523-4458.
The club offers free member-
ship to first-time members. The
Ontario club provides many
opportunities such as interna-
tional exchanges, leadership
camps and social events.
The' Huron Junior Farmers are
hosting the Zone 7 Winter
Games on Jan. 14 in Seaforth,
Bayfield and Clinton. Events
include curling, bowling, basket-
ball, volleyball, broomball and
cross-country skiing.
On Saturday evening there is a
dance being held.
The Huron County Junior
Farmers' new president is part of
a brother -sister team. Grant's
sister, Sharon Bergsma, was also
elected to the executive. She is
editor of the club's newsletter,
lluronco.
