Two local students will take a
step out of the First World and a
step into the Third World in Febru-
ary.
Don Sills, of Seaforth, and Jeff
Flanagan, of RR 1 Dublin, are
headed on a poverty awareness trip
to the Dominican Republic.
The two St. Michael's Secondary
School students will help with
development and work projects as
well as seeing health and education
facilities in the West Indies country
during the excursion from Feb. 25
to March 4.
Jeff, who has never travelled
outside of Canada and. the United
States, says he is going down to
become more enlightened about
how well-off we are in our Cana-
dian society.
"I am going to get a great knowl-
edge about how things work down
there and how the people cope with
their problems," said the OAC
student.
He said he will learn more on the
Poverty Awareness Trip than he
would if he was just visiting a
country as a tourist.
"I think I'll -know more about
how well-off we arc...when we
come back I might do a little bit
more charity work around the com-
munity," he said. "A lot of my
friends went on the trip last year
and they said it was a good experi-
ence."
Don, a grade 12 student, says his
parents are very supportive of 'his
decision to take the trip and they
feel he will learn about the things
North Americans take for granted.
"I wanted to go down for the
experience of seeing what the Third
World's like," he said. "Hopefully
when I come home I'll have a
different approach to things."
Each student must help raise they
$1,200 cost of the trip. They will be
seeking sponsors from among the
service clubs and individuals of the
area.
They will also be taking a suit-
case full of medical supplies such
as bandages, etc. The students also
encourage the donation of shoes
and sports supplies such as baseball
bats.
If you care to donate to the pov-
erty awareness trips being taken by
Some St. Michael's students from
the Dublin and Seaforth areas have
travelled to the Dominican Republic
for the past two years. Upon return-
ing, some of their feelings have
ranged from enjoyment of the trip
to guilt and sadness about the abject
poverty in the country.
The trip is organized by a group
called Rayjon Share Care, an ecu-
menical non-profit group funded, in
part, by the Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA).
Jeff is well- own as a hockey
player who has exce through the
ranks of the Seaforth minor hockey
system. Don is well-known as an
award-winning singer.
