COMEBACK FALLS SHORT - The SDHS senior girls basketball
team was down by 21 points at the half but made a game of it,
getting as close as four with a little under two minutes to go, but
ended up dropping a 60-53 decision to Goderich in the Huron
Conference final at the local school last Wednesday aftemoon.
Carly Price of Egmondville led all shooters in the game with 25
points.
Seaforth Juniors lose two
games during weekend play
The Seaforth Centenaires can't
beat anybody but themselves these
days.
They fell below .500 for the first
time since last season by virtue of a
pair of weekend losses, 5-2 to the
charging Lucan Irish 6 at Ilderton
Saturday night after a pitiful
performance on home ice Friday - a
7-3 humiliation by the Port Stanley
Lakers.
After starting the Ontario Hockey
Association's Junior Development
League season with six wins in
seven games the local juniors have
now lost seven of eight and
tumbled from a share of first place
to seventh with a slim one point
lead over the two teams now tied
for the eighth and last playoff
position in the Western Division.
On the positive side, with
anybody knocking off everybody
else on any given night this season
only five points separate the second
and eighth -place clubs.
Because scheduling was done by
computer this season the Cents play
the, Irish again tonight at 8:15 p.m.
at Lucan, and yet again, but this
time on home ice Friday at 8:30 at
the Seaton)) and District
Community Centres. Seaforth plays
another home game Sunday night at
8 p.m. when Exeter's Hawks come
a calling.
The Centenaires played like
hippies in the sunshine this
weekend, but better Saturday night
than they did Friday, which may
not be saying much, since they
were playing the league leaders in
the first game and the cellar -
dwellers in the second.
Seaforth trailed 1-0 early in the
second period at Ilderton after their
point man on thc powerplay went
for a figurc skate along the boards
with no one backing him up and
Lucan scored shorthanded. Then
Seaforth forward Jason Dunseith
was run from behind with a vicious
check by Lucan dcfenceman Bryan
Stiefel, leading to a lengthy delay
while "Dunce" was taken from the
ice with a back injury on a stretcher
and transported to University
Hospital in London. Lucan had
another checking from behind
ejection within two minutes but the
Centenaires couldn't connect on the
subsequent powcrplays.
Then the Cents scored but soon
another Seaforth forward had his
pocket picked lollygagging out of
his own zone shorthanded, and the
Irish again capitalized. Next the
Seaforth self-destruction began in
Gamest as a couple of silly penalties
helped thc Irish score four goals in
three and a half minutes and run
their winning streak to three.
Steve Mc[natty took an
unsportsmanlike penalty for
dribbling a half-hearted shot at net
after the whistle, and Lucan scored
on the powerplay less than a minute
later. Shortly thereafter Mike
Lauwacrt couldn't stop yipping and
took another unsportsmanlike with
his team already a man short, so the
Irish put another one in the net 19
seconds later and before the second
minor penalty expired lit the light
again. Game over, except for the
excuses.
Special teams were the star of the
game for the Irish who scored four
powerplay goals and the other
shorthanded. Jason Murray and
Steve Geiger replied for the
Centenaires. Lucan's rejuvenated
powerplay had also connected three
times in a 3-2 upset win over the
Exeter Hawks Wednesday.
Seaforth started the game with a
couple of no shows including their
assistant coach and trainer and only
13 skaters, but injuries and penalties
left them with only five extras on
the pine by the end of regulation.
Friday night's crowd was
surprisingly sparse, and perhaps it
was a blessing in disguise, as the
league -leading Lakers came with
just 14 skaters and minus three of
their best players but still managed
to manhandle the locals with ease.
They led 4-3 after the first period
and never looked back, with
McInally, Murray and Jeff Volland,
who netted a buzzer -beater in the
last nano -second of the first period,
scoring the Centenaires' goals.
Defenceman Kalen Carroll missed
both weekend games because of
injury. Forward Ted Sills and
trainer Patrick Moylan have both
departed out West and dcfenceman
Greg Matthison has quit the team,
citing burnout as the reason.
Backup goaltender Scott Wood has
been cut and replaced by Chad
Lamont, also from the Seaforth
midgets.

NOVICE ACTION The Seaforth novices beat Parkhill in this
game at the Peter Flanagan Memorial Novice Hockey Tournament
at the arena on the weekend. Chesley and Ingersoll won the

Hockey Tournament held
Chesley and Ingersoll were the

Sunday, for "CC" down to "E"

2 to win the consolation.

scored by Calahan O'Reilly,
assisted by Nicolas Jansen.
