REMEMBRANCE DAY -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, NOVEMBER 9, 1994 -PAGE 23
We remember...
WILLIAM WALLACE
William Wallace was the father of
Sheila Mullin -Campbell who lives
on Goderich St. West in Seaforth.
Sheila was born in Sunderland, in
the industrial north-east of England
and her father was in the British
Army on a ship that was torpedoed
off Singapore near the start of the
war. He five_years as -a
WMnese Prisoner of War.
Back home it was thought all the
soldiers on the ship were dead and
a memorial service was held. Mrs.
Wallace and one other woman were
the only ones who refused to go,
arguing that they wouldn't until
they knew for sure.
Mrs. Mullin -Campbell rt rembers
her father as a gentle man, who
often said of his POW experiences
that "the lucky ones were the ones
who died," because the macho -like
warrior culture of the Japanese
regarded those who allowed
themselves to be captured as les$
than men, and treated them the
same way.
Ironically, the area of England
where Mrs.Mullin-Campbell is from
now has a chronically high
unemplo ment rate of more that 30
percent 1rgely because in the post-
war world much of its heavy
industry could not compete with the
more "modern" Japanese, who had
to rebuilt their industrial base
because it was totally obliterated in
the war.
One of the largest employers in
Sunderland is now Toyota.
Mr. Wallace died in 1979. A sbn,
Ron, served with the British Army
during the Suez crisis of 1956.
