On May 10, 1940 our artillery
was firing on German Paratroopers
that had landed sometime around
the 9th or 10 of May, 1940, in and
around Alblasserdam, near
Rotterdam in the worst part of
Holland.
Our artillery was put in place
during the night in a farmer's field,
and we proceeded firing during
most of the days of 10-11-12-13 of
May 1940. The German airforce
must have had a pretty good idea
were we were firing from, as we
were bombarded by Stuka's
divebombers, one bomb fell so
close to our cannon's that we were
splattered -with mud, instead of
scrap metal. The reason for nobody
getting seriously hurt was, the area
is very swampy and the bomb fell
deep in the ground. It however blew
the roof off the farm house where
our communications group was
located. After this experience we
moved to another field during the
ni t.
the May 15 a German tank
group caught us and we were POW
for four weeks. It only lasted five
days but nobody at that time
thought, the war would last five
more miserable years. We all saw
Rotterdam being bombed and
burned for days and a lot of lives
were lost.
