H. Pearson Chesney joined
R.C.A.F. Motor Transport in
November, 1942.
Overseas with 143 Typhoon
Fighter Bomber Wing 440 Sqd.
Second Tactical Air Force, which
was second army support through
Normandy in France, Belguim,
Holland, Germany to the Baltic Sea.

DAVID CORNISH
David Cornish, now retired and
living on Helen St., worked for the
Royal Bank for 23 years and was
also the credit manager at Topnotch
in Seaforth. During the war he was
a Private in the Perth Regiment of
the army from 1941 until 1946,
serving in Canada and England for
half that time before being sent to
Italy.
In November 1943 Mr. Cornish
was on a ship, in a convoy of 140,
that was torpedoed off the north
coast of Africa. The crew
abandoned ship and he was picked
up in a life boat, but two hospital
units and a dental unit were lost.
The ship was towed into
Phillipsviile harbour and he and his-
surviving
issurviving shipmates spent a month
in a Red Cross camp before being
re -equipped. He was in Avcllino,
south cast of Naples when the war
ended.
JOHN CARLYLE CORNISH
Mr. Cornish from Brucefield
enlisted with the Royal Canadian
Air Force in November 1941. After
training as an air gunner he was
sent to England in 1943 where he
subsequently posted to the 460
Australian Squadron at Binbrook in
the #1 Group Bomber Command.
His crew flew bombing missions to
Wuppertal and Dusseldorf in
Germany and was flying to Bockum
when their bomber took a direct
cannon hit north -cast of
Amsterdam.
Mr. Cornish bailed out and was
the only survivor, hitting the ground
with a bullet in his left leg, a toe
missing on his right foot and badly
burned face. He spent the remainder
of the conflict as a prisoner of war
in various Stalags in Frankfurt,
Lithuania and Grosse Tychow.
While in one POW camp he met
his father's partner's son, Bob
Dalrymple, also from Brucefield.
He was liberated on May 2, 1945
by the Royal Dragoon Guards of
Scotland.
He retired in 1985 after 32 years
as an ambulance attendant and
funeral director.

A.R. COUTTS
AC2 A.R. Coutts enlisted in the
R.C.A.F. in March, 1943 and after
basic training in Edmonton and
technical training in Saskatoon and
Montreal Wireless School, was
posted in Bagotville, P.Q. and
Debert, N.S. prior to War's end.
Reenlisting in March 1946 and a ,
five-year hitch in Transport Com-
mand was posted to 421 (F) Sqdn.
flying out of Odiham, U.K. This
was the forerunner to 1 Air Divi-
sion in Europe with l(F) Wing
being activated in 1951. Retiring to
Canada in 1953, a posting to 403
(F) Sqdn Calgary was followed by
a move to Maritime Command
Summervale, P.E.I. and a
subsequent move to maintenance
appraisal team at Canadair in
Montreal who were building the
Argus aircraft for Maritime Patrol.
On the move again to 3(F) Wing
in Germany for a tour and return to
Canada, in 1963 to 11 TSU in
Montreal. The final transfer in May,
1967 to CFB Clinton where retire-
ment beckoned in 1970 at Base
Closure. Presently residing at 173
Warren St., Goderich.
