Local man in second best quartet in entire province A Pastime paid off for a local man recently! Dave Campbell, 28, of Victoria St. in Seaforth, sings lead for a foursome that finished second in the province at the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA) Ontario championships, that were held at the London Convention Centre Oct. 15 and 16. The quartet he sings for is called Pastime. ?err?vcrre. ation pvw BY MARTY BEDARD Martial art stresses pressure points JuJutsu, the 'Gentle Art of Self-defence' will be offered at the Vanastra Public School, every- Tuesday and Thursday evening from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. beginning Nov. 1, 1994. Hakko Ryu JuJutsu is a martial art specializing in wrist locks and pressure points. The art orig- inated in 8th century Japan among the Samurai- worriors. This gentle art of self-defence has become popular in North America through the efforts of Michael J. LaMonica, the highest ranking non -Oriental practitioner of Hakko Ryu in the world. It is from Mr. LaMonica that the instructors of the Shining Moun- tain Dojo learned the art. For more information please call 482-5769 or 482-7734. The Seaforth Cooperative Children's Centre will be hosting a Babysitting Course November 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. each night. To register you must be at least 11 years old. The St. James Catholic Women's League (CWL) Annual Bazaar and Tea will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the St. James School Auditorium. Come cnjoy a Penny Sale, Bake Table, Mys- tery Table, Sewing, Crafts and a Tea Room. The draw for a quilt will be made on this afternoon. Come out and support this local group. NOVEMBER 18-19 Freeway NOVEMBER 25-26 Monstrous Jive Dave, who used to be a familiar voice in barbershop singing locally, joined Pastime about a year ago and has been travelling to Mississauga twice a week to practise with the group that includes two singers from Zephyr, north of Toronto near Sutton, and another from Oshawa. He also now sings for the Scarborough chorus called the Dukes of Harmony. There were 18 foursomes in the quartet competition, and about 1,200 attended the event. Ron Bennett and John Aubin Hi: h Bowlers A gr s r turnout and some good scores in Senior Bowling on Friday, Oct. 28. Ron Bennett took over year-to-date single with a 308. His triple was 617. John Aubin's 660 triple was only 3 pins less than Charlie's year-to-date triple of 663. John's 165,240 and 255 gave him this score. Other good scores by the men were Campbell Wey 214; Eric Matzold 208; Charlie Perkins 208; Gord Murray 198; Norm McLean 186; John Van Loon 185; Oliver Pryce 179; Fred Munnings 182 Single and 503 triple (very good, Fred!). Olive Little had high single 177 and triple 492 for the ladies. Behind Olive were Beryl Reid 175; Betty Leonhardt 172 and Annie Malcolm 168. Three teams, Bluejays, Owls and Canaries are all tied for first place. NAPPY 184 BIRTHDAY KEVIN COLMAN NOV. 2.1 Wannabees close in on Buds There were a few people who had some problems bowling on Oct. 27 at the Starlight Lanes for the Thursday Nighters. May- be they had a tough day at work, or maybe it was some- thing completely different. We may never know, will we, Deb and Gary? They ended up with scores of 97 and 93. We'll let you guess who had which! Not everybody bowled as wonderful- ly as that though, thank good- ness. Murray's Marauders managed to take two games and total pins from the top team The Buds. Murray Bennewies' 242,328,294-864 and Todd Doig's 203 and 244 helped the team out. Jason Cooper of The Buds had a great game of 199. The second match -up of the night was between the Wannabees and the Falling Pins. It was very close with the Wannabees taking four points and the Falling Pins managing to get 3. The Wannabees' top bowlers were Steve Steep, 237 and Tracy Klaver, 196-497. The Falling Pins got good bowling from Doug Procter 203. The Boozin' Brewers swept the Wolverines on lanes five and six. Leading the way for the Brewers were Doug Leonhardt 239,373,214-826 and Trevor Price 222,227-622. Mike Thomson's 196 and Jason Wheatley's 165 were the best that the Wolverines could do. Come out to the Farm in Avonbank to celebrate our 6th Annual Christmas in the Count 7 Murray Bennewies leads Jays to win BY GEORGE LOVE Murray Bennewies had an excel- lent night on Monday, Oct. 24 when he led the Jays to a 7-0 win over the Doves in St. James Bowling League action at Starlight lanes. His scores were 283,328,358- 969 and Wilhelmina Poppe helped with 219-512. Top bowler for the Doves was Don Nolan with 219- 585. The Loons also came up with a 7-0 victory when they blanked the Eales and climbed to within 2 points of the first place Partridges. High bowlers for the Loons were Kevin Johnston 257,281,235-773; Bob Dinsmore 218,258-664, and Martin Van Bakel 200-502. For the Eagles, it was George Love 202,259,210-671, and Betty Johnston 205-574. The Partridges held first place with a 5-2 win over the Emus. Connie Marion paced the Partridges with 277,287-756 and Arie Van Diepen 274,244-676. Leading the Emus were Gerry Nobel 229,228,258-715, Gord Murray 224, 226-620, and Mark Higenell 212- 557. Team standings: Partridges - 30; Loons - 28; Emus - 20; lays - 19; Doves - 16; Eagles - 13. Farmers' meeting Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario will hold their annual general meeting on Saturday, Nov. 12. The meeting will take place at Grey Central Public School in Ethel from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with registration at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be potluck. The sixth meeting of the Baking Buddies 4-H club was held on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. Members had fun decorating cupcakes with Royal icing and colored tube icing. Junior Leader Melanie Cronin demonstrated how to ice in fancy and unique ways. Everyone had fun experimenting with different tips and colors as they decorated cupcakes, It was decided books were due on Oct. 24, at the achievement planning meeting. The achievement pro- gram is to be held on Nov. 8 at O.M.A.F.R.A. Members enjoyed the cupcakes and agreed that over icing the would be to sweet.
