Hibbert race on for councillor seats
BY ANDY BADER
from Mitchell Advocate
The only race in the normally -
politically active Hibbert Township
Council this time is one for three
councillor spots.
Four township residents, two
incumbents and two newcomers, are
fighting it out for the available
positions.
Incumbents Fran Lannin and Barb
MacLean are seeking re-election,
while newcomers Lou Maloney and
Cinth Vogels are out for their spots.
Reeve Walter McKenzie and
Deputy -Reeve Robert I. Norris were
acclaimed, as were the three
trustees in the Police Village of
Dublin --incumbents Don MacRae
and Jerry Murray and rookie Larry
Parsons.
Lannin, of RR 2 Dublin, is seek-
ing her third three-year term on
council, having sat for her six-year
political life on the Mitchell &
District Planning Advisory Commit-
tee, this past year as chairperson.
She also represents Hibbert on the
Mitchell Mobility Bus board, and
has spent three years with COPS.
The school bus driver and farmer,
Lannin and her husband Blythe
have three children: Gary, Wendy
and Lee Ann.
Lannin said that because Hibbert
is an agricultural community, she
hopes to continue to preserve that
identity, as well as encourage busi-
ness into the hamlet areas to
increase the overall tax base.
MacLean, of RR 2 Staffa, also
farms with her husband Andy. The
mother of three children, daughter
Terry Lynn Walkom and sons Rob
and Scott, they also have three
grandchildren. She is completing
her first three-year term on council.
Extremely active in the women's
institute at both the local and dis-
trict executive levels, MacLean has
also canvassed for many years for
various charities, making her visible
in the township.
During her term, she has served
on the Mitchell & District Arena
board, and worked on both the
Fare' Safety Association and South
Hibbert Athletic Association.
MacLean notes that she has
always been interested in politics,
and now that she has the time "I
believe I have valuable insight to
offer.
"We need to keep our local input
and not be governed by Toronto,"
she said.
She added that since her entire
Pauline Siemon
Public school
trustee acclaimed
Pauline Sicmon is interested in
education because she has four
children in the Huron County
system. That is why she became
involved and was recently
acclaimed as a Public School
Trustee for Scaforth and
McKillop.
Mrs. Sicmon, 42, is married to
Keith and lives at RR 4 Walton
with children: Jennifer, Amy,
Erin and Christopher.
She describes herself as self-
employed for a farm equipment
dealership. Mrs. Siemon has
been on the executive of .the
Scaforth and District RingcUc
Association for the past seven
years, has been the leader of a

immediate family lives in the town-
ship, she'd like to continue to be a
part of the future planning and
development of it.
Maloney, of 139 Ontario St.,
Dublin, is vying for his first term
on Hibbert council. He did, how-
ever, serve six years with the
Huron -Perth Separate School Board
as a trustee as well as 10 years as a
trustee for the Police Village of
Dublin.
Part-owner of M & M Quality
Vealer Ltd., a veal calf operation,
Maloney is the former owner of the
Dublin Feed Mill Ltd.
He and his wife Therese have two
married daughters, and is active in
both St. Patrick's Roman Catholic
Church in Dublin as well as the
Seaforth Council of the Knights of
Columbus.
He, too, has always taken an
active interest in all elections, and
now has more time to participate as
a candidate.
I do not have any election prom-
ises, but will do my best to serve
the residents of Hibbert," he said.
A brand new candidate, Vogels,
of -RR 2 Dublin, is confident his
experience as a hog and cash crop
farmer will benefit the township as
a cot ncillor.
Vogels, 46, has served on the
executive of the Pork Producers for
the past decade, and served on the
executive of the St. Columban
Parish Council for six years.
If elected, he hopes to pressure
government in keeping the farm tax
rebate program at current levels, to
be a strong voice for agriculture, to
supply the best service for the
money available in the township's
road, drainage, buildings and
machinery programs and cut down
on social services abuse.
He and his wife Maria have four
children: Christopher, 22; Mark, 20;
Leanne, 17 and Julie, 15.
