Huron studies 911
A task force has been set up to
study the feasibility of implement-
ing a county -wide 911 emergency
service.
Two representatives from each of
the affected municipalities and the
emergency service providers (fire,
ambulance, police) are also to look
into the mechanics and costs of
creating a new addressing system -
a requirement of 911 service.
The service must be universally
available, equitable and affordable
to function properly. In neighbour-
ing Bruce County one maverick
municipality threatened to kibosh
the proposal there; that problem
resolved itself and 911 service is on
Bruce County's agenda for 1995.
Telephone subscriber fees and
charges for municipal answering
costs are the likeliest funding
sources. A special tax has been
ruled out.
Subscriber costs of about 32 cents
per telephone line per month would
provide some of the computers and
circuitry, but Huron County needs
eight to 10 full-time employees to
man a self -operated station.
Bell Canada offers a much
cheaper alternative in which trained
Bell operators receive calls and
route them to the appropriate
dispatchers.
Huron is one of the last counties
in Ontario to consider 911 service,
which is viewed as being child -
friendly and more convenient for
tourists who need emergency
assistance.
As well, the addressing system
which accompanies the service
(each municipal address is also
given a special emergency address)
makes it easy for fire, ambulance
and police vehicles to Locate crises.

Former CN
railway lands in
private hands .
Grey Township Council held
its regular meeting on Oct. 17
and passed bylaws which author-
ized the conveyance of a number
of sections of the former CN
railway back to the abutting
landowners for the costs
involved. Almost all the parcels
of land from lots 2 to 34, con-
cession 9 were purchased by the
abutting landowners. Council
also decided to place advertise-
ments in local newspapers to
advise the general public that the
transactions have been completed
and the property is now under
private ownership. Council
decided to run the ads mainly
out of concern for trespassing.
In a related bylaw, Council
passed a by-law to rezone the
former CN property on lots 4
and 5, concession 9 to a special
Institutional Zone to permit the
establishment of a snowmobile
clubhouse. The abutting land-
owners did not express an inter-
est in this section of property
and the B -W Trailblazers Snow-
mobile Club has approached
Council to purchase the property
to relocate their clubhouse.
Council also declared the
weeks of November 6 to 12 as
Crime Prevention Week and
November 21 to 27 as 'Get
ready for Snowmobiling Week,
'94'.
Grey Township Council
decided that a candidates' night
for the upcoming municipal
election would be held on Tues-
day, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. at the
Ethel Community Centre.
In othcr business Grey town-
ship council authorized payment
of general accounts totalling
S19,490.61.
A special meeting of Council
---has been scheduled for Oce 27 —
at 7 p.m. to deal with drainage
and rezoning matters. The next
regular meeting of Council is
scheduled for Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
