SOCCER OR TWISTER? - This is no game of Twister as St. Columban's Mike Seiler gets his legs
caught up in the legs of a Portugese Falcon player on Sunday. Although the two players tumbled on this
play, St. Columban came out on top by winning the playoff match.
Local club wins playoff game
On Sunday, October 2, St.
Columban Men's Soccer Team
played a playoff game at home
against the London Portugese Fal-
cons. The second place finish by St.
Columban gave them home field
advantage and loss by either team
would signal their season over.
St. Columban would open the
scoring early in the game off a long
free kick by Dave Murray. Dean
Martin brought the ball down and
after beating two defenders, he put
the ball behind the Falcon goal-
keeper. For the rest of the half, St.
Columban held the momentum but
were unable to get another goal
despite good chances by both Steve
and Bill Ryan. The half ended with
the good guys up 1-0.
In the second half St. Columban
would have to play into the wind
and they came out very flat-footed.
The Falcons would eventually
capitalize on this when two for-
wards slipped through the defense
and put the ball behind a defence-
less St. Columban keeper, Jason
Dietz. This may have been the
boost St. Columban needed for they
carne back strong and applied some
pressure to the Falcon's defense.
Briefly
Devereaux magic
for Cullitons
A goal and three assists from a
Seaforth native led his team, the
Stratford Cullitons, to a 6-2 win
over the Owen Sound Greys in
Midwestern Junior B Hockey
Action last Friday.
Boyd Devereaux, at 16 years
of age, typifies the talent of the
Stratford Cullitons this year. Last
year he was named rookie -of -
the -year by the hockey club and
turned down offers to play in a
Junior A league.
Cullitons coach Dennis
Flanagan Jr. told the Stratford
Beacon -Herald, "he possesses a
lot of skills that most players
don't get until they're a lot
older. Really, he has the best of
both worlds. He has that ability
that older players have yet he
still has that boyish fever for the
game."
Dinny Flanagan Sr. manager of
the Cullitons told the Stratford
daily, "he's the best 16 -year-old
to play here since Ed Olczyk."
According to the news report
Devereaux said, "I've made a
conscious effort to come out
strong.
"One of the goals I set was to
not fall back."
Papple scores for
St. Marys team
A Seaforth-area hockey player
scored a pair of goals to widen
the gap and Icad his team the St:
Mary's Lincolns to a 5-2 victory
over the Chatham Micmacs in
Western Jr. B action last Friday,
Sept. 23.
Steve Papple, returns to the
Lincolns after playing last season
with the Elmira Sugar Kings,
where he was named the top
defensive player in the
Midwestern Jr. 13 League.
The 20 -year-old centre will
help the younger forwards on the
Lincolns throughout the season,
according to assistant general
manager Greg Clark.
The win last Friday lett the
team undefeated in the scacon
with a 3-0 record in the East
Division.
Within five minutes they would get
the break they deserved when a
cross by John Jordan forced a hand-
ball inside the eighteen -year box.
Brian Melady took the resulting
penalty kick and scored on the shot
by going right to the centre of the
net. The Falcon keeper, was disap-
pointed with his miscue on the shot
as he simply went the wrong way.
They home team was up 2-1.
With only ten minutes left in the
game, St. Columban thought they
would be able to hold off the Lon-
don team and earn the victory.
However, a long shot by a Falcon
forward was lost in the sun by
Jason Dietz and before he could
recover, the ball had rolled across
the goal line for the tying goal. For
the remainder of the game, the
London team appeared like they
wanted to go into overtime as each
time they received the ball they
simply kicked it down field or out
of bounds. With only minutes left
in the game, St. Columban was
awarded a corner kick. Nehru
Budna placed the kick to the edge
of the eighteen -yard line which
enabled Dave Murray to head the
ball towards the net. Before the
Falcon keeper could get the ball,
Brian Melady headed the ball over
the keeper and into the net for the
go-ahead goal. Within minutes the
whistle signalled the end of the
game with St. Columban winning 3-
2.
One of the reasons for the
Falcon's loss was the poor play by
their goalkeeper. Everyone was
pleased to hear that Wayne Ryan
had got over his bug from a few
weeks before, however Brian
Melady was not as lucky as it had
seemed to be passed on to him.
St. Columban will finish their
season next weekend against Lon-
don Curinga away from home. As
theses two teams finished first and
second place respectively, it should
be a good match that will determine
the playoff champion.
On a side note, the hockey pool
that is being run by the team has hit
a delay due to the NHL. labour
dispute. Subsequently, the deadline
for the pool will be set as ten days
after the commencement of the
season. For information on this or
relating to the upcoming game, one
can call Brian Melady at 527-0573.

Do you fix your own teeth,
or do you let a dentist do them?
We're not trying to he flip, hut consider the following: For most of the important
things we do in life we use a specialist. Someone who's been trained to understand
ell of the nuances and options. The same is true with insurance. And that's where
an Independent Insurance Broker comes in. Independent Brokers don't work for a
specific insurance company, so a broker can 'shop around' to help you get the
insurance coverage and plan that's just perfect for your home and business needs.
Simply put, nn Independent Insurance Broker works for you. And that can often
save you time and money. There. That didn't hunt n bit, did it?
