Enrolinent in area schools has

enrolment totalled 174.

Fire Marshal investigates fire
H(. spital ..discusse.s blood -issue
BY TIM CUMMING
Expositor Editor
The Ontario Hospital Association
is urging hospitals to tell patients
who received blood transfusions
between 1978 and 1985 that they
should be checked for HIV (which
causes AIDS).
Seaforth Community Hospital, in
cooperation with Stratford General
Hospital, is deciding how to
respond to these recommendations.
"Seaforth is following up and will
be taking steps in cooperation with
Stratford," said Bill Thibert, Chief
Executive Officer. "It would be
nice to have a consistent approach.
among all hospitals in the region."
Under the OHA plan hospitals
would inform former patients by
registered mail if they received
blood products during 1978 to
1985.
"Individuals who were in hospital
during the period may not even be
aware they received blood products
during their hospital stay," accord-
ing to Mississauga Hospital, the
latest institution to mail notices to
former patients.

Community Hospital at this time.

Seaforth's hospital and Stratford
General Hospital will do a six-
month cooperative review of blood
bank services and the application
for a blood bank can later be
reviewed by the Ministry.

A helicopter landing pad is cur-
rently under construction at
Seaforth Community Hospital. The
heliport is being constructed by
Smith Construction of Seaforth at a
quoted cost of $37,400, including
the relocation of Hydro lines. This
is in addition to a 53,600 study
prior to the project.
All costs of the project are paid
for by the Ontario Ministry of
Health except for regular mainten-
ance of the site.
Hospital Chief Executive Officer
Bill Thibert told the Board of Gov-
ernors on Sept. 27 that it was
important the contract be given to a
local firm.
I was very clear we wanted to
do it locally."
The construction firm started
clearing the property last w.:ek and
put in top soil and gravel. Hydro
lines are to be relocated this month.
The hospital is anticipating com-
pletion of the project by Oct. 31.
More prospective mothers are
giving birth at Seaforth Community
Hospital.
The hospital projects there will be
45-50 deliveries this year while the
total number in 1992 was 14.
There was a seventy-one per cent
increase in a six-month period this
year compared to the same period
last year. There were 14 deliveries
from April to September 1993.
There were 24 deliveries at the
hospital in the same period in 1994.
Midwives are expected to become
a part of Seaforth Community Hos-
pital in the near future.
"The hospital will be looking at
preparing the necessary bylaws,
policies and procedures in order to
implement (midwifery at the hospi-
tal)," said Bill Thibert, Chief
Executive Officer.
The hospital's medical advisory
board has endorsed midwives in the
hospital but the Board of Governors
hasn't yet dealt with the issue.
There has been an expression of
interest by a practising midwife but
no one has yet made an application
for privileges at the hospital.

Seaforth Community Hospital is
investigating the feasibility of pro-
viding overnight switchboard ser-
vice to area fire departments. The
hospital is trying to determine
whether it is technically possible.
A fire in Goderich Township on
September 15 claimed the lives of
two local residents, and destroyed
their home.
It took the use of dental records
and X-rays to positively identify the
victims.
Erik Nielsen, 51 and Suzanne
Nielsen, 49 were the only occupants
of the home when the fire broke out
in the late evening of Thursday,
Sept. 15
At approximately 11:10 p.m.

to a call of a house fire at Lot 30
Conc. 6 of Goderich Township.
Upon arrival the Bayfield

the home to be engulfed in flames.
Soon after their arrival they put out
a mutual aid call to Goderich,
Clinton and Brucefield departments
for the use of their equipment. . .
It took firefighters about an hour
to put the flames down and they
remained on the scene throughout
the night into early morning wetting
down hot spots.
