4-H to publish history
Do you wonder where 4-H got
its name? Where did 4-H begin?
What were the early projects?
Where is 4-H headed in the
future? All these questions are
answered in the new book Head,
Heart, Hands, Health: A History
of 4-H in Ontario to be launched
in 1995.
In recognition of 80 years of
4-H in Ontario, the Ontario 4-H
Council is compiling this history
of County and Provincial 4-1-1
activities. It is to be completed
and ready for distribution in
early January as a kick off to
celebrations across the Province
throughout 1995.
The book will document the
Ontario 4-H Program from its
inception in 1915 through to the
,present.

FARE BOX FOR MOBILITY BUS - A fare box from a 1920 Toronto streetcar was recently acquired by
CHuMS (Central Huron Mobility Service) for use in their mobility bus they're currently raising money for.
Mike Regier, Operations Manager of CHuMS, left, drops a coin in the fare box as Ron Latham, Chair
of CHuMS Steering Committee wears the old conductor's hat and whistle. A fundraising breakfast for
CHuMS will be held on Sunday, September 18 at the Seaforth Fairgrounds.
CHUMS seeks funds for bus

Organizers of a mobility bus
service are holding their first major
fundraiser in Seaforth to help raise
some of the 525,000 still needed for
the purchase of a new bus.
The Seaforth Agricultural Society
is hosting a fundraising breakfast
for CHuMS (Central Huron Mobil-
ity Service) on Sunday, Sept. 18
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the
Seaforth Fairgrounds. The agricul-
tural society is supplying f(xxl and
volunteers for the breakfast.
The organization has raised about
half the amount ($23,000 to chile),
from donations from local service
clubs and individuals, they need for
the purchase of the low -floor bus.
The Ontario Ministry of Transporta-
tion (MTO) will subsidize 50 per
cent of the capital and start-up costs
for the mobility service.
Overland Custom Coach is donat-
ing one of their mobility buses to
transport people to and from the
breakfast, like CHUMS did for an
earlier Strawberry Social held in
1
Seaforth. "It's a perfect opportunity
for people to take a ride in the
bus," said Mike Regicr, Operations
Manager for CHuMS. Anyone
wishing a ride on the bus should
contact Bev Brown, CHUMS
Coordinator at 482-5666.
The group is also considering
purchasing a demonstrator mobility
bus if one is available for sale
instead of a new model. There is a
push for all city transit to have low -
floor vehicles in the next few years,
said Rcgicr.
A draft agreement for the installa-
tion of the mobility bus service has
been sent to all municipalities
involved for their review and appro-
val. The agreement, which has been
reviewed by the MTO, is similar to
agreements by the 100 other mobil-
ity bus services already in place in
the province, said Ron Latham,
Chair of CHuMS Steering Commit-
tee and Manager of Contracts.
The five municipal councils in
central Huron - Clinton, Seaforth,
Hullctt, McKillop, Tuckersmith -
arc studying a bylaw/agreement
which needs to be passed by each
municipality before service can be
provided to residents, according to
CHuMS. CHuMS is also currently
working on a service statement to
be sent to municipalities.
Over 200 invitations were sent to
households in Huron which regis-
tered applications with CHuMS as
users of a mobility service. The
applications will be reviewed this
month to determine if each person
meets the eligibility criteria to
receive this subsidized service,
according to CHuMS.
Fundraising is a major issue for
CHuMS at this time, said Latham.
According to a newsletter from the
group, they hope to also raise the
first year's operating casts (approxi-
mately 521,000) before they put a
bus on the road. No deadline has
been set for the totals to be
reached.
The CHuMS Steering Committee
of 12 meets once a month and is
well -represented by the municipal-
ities involved in the service, said
Reeler.
Cost of the fundraising breakfast
is 54 per person, S3 for children
under 10 and preschoolers free.
