Family exercises for cancer research
BY TIM CUMMING
Expositor Editor
Each year some Seaforth and area
residents join to remember the
legacy of Terry Fox by running or
walking or bicycling or in-line
skating to raise money for cancer
research.
For one local family raising
money for cancer research is some-
thing very personal. The
Vansteelandt family has been taking
part in the Terry Fox Run since
1987, the first year that Ricki
Vansteelandt was diagnosed with
cancer.
"We've experienced what a fam-
ily goes through when they're faced
with cancer," said the Seaforth-area
mother. "It's devastating to be told
you have cancer."
After a recurrence of cancer in
1990, her cancer was treated suc-
cessfully. Ricki, however, has con-
tinued taking part in the Terry Fox
Run every year, along with husband
Gilbert and children Karen, 17 and
Tanya, a twenty -year-old second -
year student at the University of
Guelph.
When asked for an interview by
The Huron Expositor the
Vansteelandts, who live southeast of
Seaforth, were rather low-key about
their contribution to cancer
research. They stressed that they are
just some of the people who help
raise donations for the Terry Fox
Run.
"Each person has their own rea-
sons for doing it," said Ricki.
They say that if Terry Fox could
set out to run across the country on
one leg they could make a small
step by taking part in the run
named in his honour.
Walking or bicycling the approxi-
mately 5 km course in Seaforth is
not hard, says veteran participant
Karen Vansteelandt.
"It's something fun, it's not very
hard at all," she said, noting the
event is one of the few events the
family takes part in together.
"We find it's a great family
event," echoes Ricki. "It doesn't
matter how much you raise, you do
it for your own satisfaction."
Gilbert Vansteelandt adds that
participants learn about the town of
Seaforth and one "sees things
you've never seen before."
He says the Cancer Society has
been very helpful and it's nice to
raise some money for such a worth-
while cause. When visiting Victoria
Hospital in London, where some
patients show the painful outward
signs of cancer treatments, he says
the importance of research is evi-
dent.
"When you see people wheeled in
who can hardly walk, you've got to
think this is the right thing to do,"
he said. "We've got to raise some
funds to find a cure."
TERRY FOX SUPPORTERS - The Vansteelandt family will be taking part in the Terry Fox Run in
Seaforth again this year to help fund cancer research, along with other Seaforth-area residents. Shown
here, raring to go, are Gilbert Vansteelandt, Karen Vansteelandt and Ricki Vansteelandt. Not shown in
photo is Tanya Vansteelandt, who has also been a Terry Fox Run supporter in past years.
The Seaforth-area father noted
that some Terry Fox Runs across
the country have attracted progress-
ively fewer participants.
He urges people in the Seaforth
area to get involved.
"We'd like to see some more
people out there," he said. "It's nice
to see a new family start out."
The Vansteelandt family praises
sponsors who have donated to all
the participants in the Terry Fox
Run. They say donations large and
small are welcome.
"Every little bit counts," observes
Karen, an OAC student at St.
Michael's Roman Catholic Second-
ary School in Stratford.
"Somebody can go out there and
have five pledges of $2 apiece...it's
worth it to do it," adds Gilbert.
Hope is one of the important
things offered by the Terry Fox
Run, according to Ricki
Vansteelandt.
"It's called the Marathon of Hope
because for anybody who's experi-
enced cancer, you need hope," she
said. "I'm a good example that
cancer can be beaten."
The Terry Fox Run in Seaforth is
a course of about 5 km starting and
finishing at Seaforth and District
Community Centres. It takes place
on Sunday, Sept. 18. Registration
takes place between 10:00 a.m. and
12:00 noon at the Seaforth District
Community Centres.
The Vansteelandt family is just
one of many families who will be
taking part in the Terry Fox Run.
Perhaps you or your family will be
taking part.
Pledge sheets are available at any
Seaforth bank, the recreation office,
St. James or Seaforth Public
schools or the Seaforth Town Hall.
BRUSSELS TERRY FOX RUN
For the first time Brussels is
holding its own Terry Fox Run on
Sunday, Sept. 18 to raise money for
cancer research.
Participants in the run may start
any time between 10:00 in the
morning and 3:00 p.m. Entry forms
are available at the CIBC in Brus-
sels, Brussels Variety, JR's, The
Ark, the post office and The
Golden Lantern.
One of the organizers of the eyent
is Waneta Leishman. Her daughter
Aimee, now 7, is in remission from
a malignant tumour which was
diagnosed when she was only seven
months old.
For Waneta, the Terry Fox Run is
very important.
"It's a big deal in this house,
we've done it for quite a while,"
she said.
Aimee has been a Terry Team
Member for many years for the
Terry Fox Run in Wingham. This
year's Terry Team Member in

On August 4 Seaforth Manor
Retiremem Home residents had an
enjoyable afternoon at Bill Gibson's
home. The weather did not co-
operate so they were unable to tour
his beautiful gardens. Thanks go to
Bill for entertaining on the piano
and the pies were an extra treat.
On August 10, the Zurich Con-
nection band performed at Seaforth

to their music played.

player who performed Broadway,
Gilbert and Sullivan, Vera Lynn
and war songs. This troupe toured
between Sarnia and Wingham
throughout August. Thanks to the
Seaforth Lions and Lioness who
sponsored the performance for us.
Also, that evening residents
enjoyed listening (and dancing) to
the Stratford Olde Tyme Band.
After the performance everyone
enjoyed having barbecues this
summer.

interesting remembering how our
relatives lived in the past years. It's
hard to believe that so much has
changed.
On August 27 there was a family
day for staff and their families to
share ice-cream with residents and
their families. It was an enjoyable
day shared by all.
Get well wishes go to Hazel

Welcome to Marg McCowan.
'Till next month, take care.

A news report last week did
not clearly state that Shannon
McNeil, of Goderich, was Huron
County's first Dairy Educator.
Kim Baan, of RR 3 Walton, is
Huron County's second Dairy
Educator.
Brussels is Joanne King.
The event starts from The Ark, a
youth drop-in centre in the village,
where registration takes place. A
huge `Terry Fox Run' banner now
hangs above the village's main
street courtesy Brussels Livestock

In Canada this is the 14th Annual
Terry Fox Run for Cancer
Research, with about 3,400 com-
munities taking part. The Terry Fox
Run has also been held in 35 coun-
tries worldwide. Last year the run
raised a total of $3.6 million. Inter-
nationally the run raised $1.3 mil-
lion, a 71 per cent increase over the
previous year.
Terry Fox was a courageous
young man with an artificial leg
who ran from St. John's, New-
foundland to Thunder Bay in a
Marathon of Hope which, raised
more than $24 million for cancer
research. He died in 1981 but his
memory and his valuable work lives
on.
