The Huron Expositor, 1994-09-07, Page 16Heart course helps BY TIM CUMMING Expositor Editor Those recovering from heart disease may no longer have to travel to Clinton or Goderich for a special program called Heart to Heart. For the first time, this course will be offered in Seaforth for people who have had a heart attack, car- diac surgery or angina pectoris. The eight-week course. will be offered at Seaforth Community Hospital from Sept. 22 to Nov. 10, said Val Poisson, who is an R.P.N. at the hospital and instructs CPR. Participants in the course are asked to bring someone with them. "What we try to get is the patient and a spouse or a family member," said Poisson. Each week of the program is dedicated to a specific topic on heart disease. The course begins with a get - acquainted session, followed. in the second week with a program called `Getting to Know Your Heart.' The third week, featuring a die tician, centres around healthy eat- ing. The fourth week is about fit- ness and getting into shape and features a physiotherapist. Poisson instructs the fifth week Township accepts resignation of phone commissioner At the Aug. 16 council meet- ing Tuckersmith Township accepted with regret the resigna- tion of Robert Cooper as com- missioner of Tuckersmith Municipal Telephone System. The township council passed a motion to advertise for applica- tions for the position of commis- sioner on the system. which deals with CPR. A pharma- cist helps out with week six which is `pill talk.' Week seven deals with stress and the psychological aspects of heart disease. The eighth week winds up the program. F,ach session is two hours. The organizer of the course says its helpful for patients who may find it hard to absorb all the infor- mation given to them at the hospital immediately following a heart attack. Some people are able to rebound from a heart attack and remain active, said Poisson. "You see people who have had a heart attack who are out swimming or biking and leading a more active life than they did prior to the heart attack." To become a participant in the program heart patients may be referred by a doctor. Other recover- ing heart patients can call the Seaforth Community Hospital or Val Poisson at 527-0320. Forms about the program are available at doctors' offices. Under new provincial legisla- tion, nobody under the age of 18 can buy or be given any ammuni- tion. The 'only exception are youths between 16 and 18 years old, who have a special permit which allows them to hunt or tar- get shoot under adult supervision. And a youth who does not have this permit can be given BBs or pellets by an adult, as long as that adult supervises the youth while the youth is shooting. "Most kids [in Huron County] have BB guns or pellet guns," says Goderich OPP Const. Bill Wilson, who is the detachment's firearms training officer. "Now the thing is, they can't have ammuni- tion unless they have an adult with them." BB guns and pellet guns "always have been dangerous, as far as I'm concerned," Wilson adds. "If there's an adult with them, there is some control." Anybody buying ammunition must provide government -issued identification that include a photo- graph, date of birth and the buy- er's current address. A store that sells ammunition to an underage person - or an indi- vidual who provides ammunition to an underage person - can be fined up to $25,000 for a first con- viction and up to $50,000 for a second or subsequent one. And anyone who buys ammuni- tion without the proper permits or documents can be fined up to $5,000 on a first offence and up to $10,000 on a second or subse- quent offence. Also anyone who cannot have photo ID (for religious reasons, for example) can call the Chief Provincial Firearms Office, locat- ed in Toronto.
