New equipment for the park could cost an estimated $10,000. Reeve Bill Carnochan said the costly equipment must be purchased to avoid township liability in the case of an accident. "Liability is the big thing," he said. "That's die problem with doing it with nuts and bolts and hammers and nails." Knechtel Apple Pie625 g Box Humpty Dumpty Potato Chips or Snacks 140 g. No. 4 Hibbert school bell. Hibbert bell has new home An old Hibbert Township school bell has found a new home. Seaforth's Harold Coleman has built a brand new, wooden structure upon which the bell now stands. The 117 -year-old bell began its hisotry on top of Hibbert's SS No. 4 (School Section) in 1879. _ _. "There were seven in my father's family who all went to that school and five in my own family went to that school," he said. "I remember the school bell ringing in 1918 when the First World War was over." Harold's father was Robert Coleman who was one of the school trustees (along with Charles Young and Richard Sillery) when the building was moved to its pres- ent location at Lot 25, Concession 8 in 1915. It took a full day just to mount the school on huge skids and another day to move it across the rode to the Smale.farm. The targe bell used to ring at 9:00 and 4:00, Harold recalls, and a little hand bell ushered students in from recess. The new building for the bell took three weeks for the Seaforth man to complete. It is described as 'an old bell with a new look' by Harold. A school was first built for School Section No. 4 in 1855. A frame building was later erected in about 1869 at a cost of $895. The school bell itself cost $17 when it was purchased in 1879 and was used until 1970, when it was purchased at an auction sale by August Scherbarth. Mr. Scherbarth had also built a special building as a home for the bell when it was in his ownership. The new owner of the bell hopes it can be preserved for many more years. Mosquitos 'A' champs in soccer The St. Columban Mosquito Boys Soccer Club are the 'A' champions for the 1994 season in the Quad - County Soccer League. St. Columban placed third in league play and faced fourth place Exeter I in the first round of playoffs. St. Columban came away the winner in this match with a 3-1 victory and advanced to the next round. St. Columban eliminated the first place team, Grand Bend, with a 4-1 victory. This win saw St. Columban in the Championship game in Exeter on Saturday, August 20 against Exeter II, the second - place team. St. Columban scored in the final minutes of the game to go ahead 2-1 in a very close match. It was excellent goal tending from Jeff Murray, solid defensive play and strong play from the enure team that led this St. Columban squad to final victory. This same Mosquito team, with the help of Nicole Munro, Melissa Van Bakel, and Jessica Finlayson, brought home the silver medal from the annual Legion Tournament held in Kincardine earlier this season. Team members: Jeff Murray, Matt Smile, Kyle Bennewies, Curtis Murray, Cory Dekroon, Ban -y Verberne, Ryan Willis, Greg De Vries, Derek Akey, Adam Koehler, Brian Eckert, Kyle Murray, James Burns, Darcy Flanagan, Brad Klaver. Coaches: Patti Koehler, Dave DeVries. Swims at pool BY MIKE HENDERSON The Seaforth Lions Pool launched two loud fire crackers in the month of July, beginning with the first annual swim-a-thon. On tuesday, July 19, from 9 p.m. - 1 a.m., the Seaforth Lions Pool lifeguard staff swam numerous lengths in order to raise money for a new spine board, with generous community support. The swim-a-thon was a huge suc- cess, enabling them not only to purchase a new spine board, but other safety equipment as well. In the month of July, Saturday, July 30 marked the return of FUN DAY. Children from all across our community were the fire crackers, when they participated in a day that made them explode with laughter. Organizer/lifeguard was Shelly Lansink. A special thanks especially to Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Van Baker for their mouth-watering cooking over the lunch hour. Children ages 5-12 participated in seven 20 -min- ute stations during the morning hours. Some of which included; the three legged race, balloon toss, sac races etc...The soul putpps*_(*Pt11t- Day was to have fun, so no points were awarded for any of the games. An afternoon swim for Fun Day participants only followed the fes- tivities. TIM CUMMING PHOTO RUSH FOR THE BALL - This St. Columban Atom team managed to make the W division final against Exeter 1, held in Exeter last week. Here St. Columban players Kyle Teichert (far left) and (at right) Kristen Maloney, Nick Jansen and Mike Delvecchio rush for the ball. Despite a valiant effort the team lost 2-0. Atoms play in 'A' final The St. Columban I Atom soccer team (under 11 mixed) struggled early this season and despite several close games finished in last place with a record of 0 wins - 2 tics - 10 losses. Their first playoff game was played on a rainy day on the home field of the first place Grand Bend Team. Rain could not deter these young- sters who had recently excelled during a 'post -season exhibition game, chalking up their first win. The slightly over -confident Grand Bend team found themselves in a scoreless tic at half-time with a very unhappy coach. Early in the second half St. Columban was able to tally the first goal of the game. About 10 minutes after the first goal St. Columban scored again and defeated first -place Grand Bend 2- 0. St. Columban 1 advanced to 'A' championship game to face the second -place Exeter II squad. St. Columban controlled most of the play in the first half. However, Exeter capitalized on one of their chances and opened the scoring. Exeter scored again and defeated St. Columban 2-0 to earn the 'A' championship. The referee wrote on his game report that both teams had played an excellent game and 'nei- ther team was a loser tonight!
