Fans keeps 'the King' alive
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Staff
Long live the King. Tuesday,
August 16, 1994 was the 17th anni-
versary of the death of Elvis
Presley, a.k.a. The King of Rock
and Roll.
Dressed up to show they're Elvis
fans and proud of it were Judy
Poland of Winthrop and Mary
Becker of Seaforth.
"We're not closet fans. We'd like
Elvis fans to come out of the closet
and not feel mocked," said Poland.
The pair travelled to Memphis,
Tennessee two years ago and
attended the midnight vigil at
Graceland, the home of the late
Elvis Aaron Presley. The ceremony
went from midnight to 4:30 a.m.
Approximately 2,000 Elvis fans
passed through the gates of
Graceland with candles, said
Poland.
"There were some Elvis imitators
at the gravesite crying," said
Poland. She and Becker had a
chance to meet Elvis Presley's
uncle, Uncle Vester, who manned
the gates at Graceland for years. He
explained to Poland and Becker
about the childhood of the King.
"He (Uncle Vester) was a gentle,
Southern gentleman. He took the

My apologies to Ernie Harburn in

give Ernie the fifth place which he

Comradeship certainly is still in
the forefront in Branch 156 thanks
to the six young members who

weekend.

The local Elvis fans met other
Presley fans from as far away as
Germany, Switzerland and England.
"We had such a good time we're
going back in 1997 for the 20th
anniversary."
What does Judy Poland think of
the recent marriage of the King's
daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, to
pop superstar Michael Jackson?
"She's got a life to live, let her
live her life. She is the daughter of
Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and
Roll. Do not look down► on Elvis
for something his daugh er did."

Musical guests entertain
Activities started bright and early -
last week as a group from
Queensway Nursing Horne
got Queensway
together for Breakfast Club. They
had a good traditional breakfast of
bacon, scrambled eggs, toast, juice
and coffee.
On Tuesday morning Queensway
had some special guests. The musi-
cal due from Brussels Mennonite
Church called The Sound of Sum-
mer Players performed a show
including singing hymns, doing a
comedy skit and children's songs.
Following this show Reverend
Vernon Dean from Exeter Pente-
costal Church celebrated our weekly
church service with music and song
and an inspirational talk on 'Believ-
ing.'
We finally got some beautiful
weather to hold a barbecue. The
residents also gathered for two
baking clubs this week. One group
made a blueberry strussel
coffeecake and the second group
made date and nut loaf.
