THE SOUL MAN - The Devil (Dennis Fitzgerald), left, presents a unique curling -for -your -soul contract
to Alberta cobbler and curler Wullie MacCrimmon (Gordon Milroy) in the Blyth Festival's production of
The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon. The play runs at Blyth Festival Theatre until September 3.
Wullie curls for soul at Blyth
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Staff
You'll have a devil of a time at
W.O. Mitchell's The Black Bonspiel
of Wullie MacCrimmon currently
running at the Blyth Festival, as
long as there are no disciples of
Satan sitting near you in the audi-
ence.
Yes, Satan (Dennis Fitzgerald)
himself appears on stage to offer
cobbler Wullie MacCrimmon
(Gordon Milroy) a chance to curl in
the MacDonald Briar in exchange
for his soul. MacCrimmon makes a
counter-offer and the two face each
other on the ice for a live curling
match in the second act of the play.
There's nothing like a deal -with -
the -devil story -line to hold your
attention. What's going to happen
next? Will Wullie roast for eternity
in curling hell?
Almost the same time the devil,
or O. Cloutie as he's called in the
play, appeared on stage one of his
evil helpers popped into a seat
behind this reviewer. At the end of
every line spoken on stage, the
gargoyle of hell sitting in the audi-
ence would say out loud for those
around to hear: "Oh, God!" or "Oh,
Jesus!" or "Oh, no!" Thank God the
Forces of Good prevailed and some
free seats were available further
down the row for the second half of
the play where the hellish heckler

Wullie and his three Charlie
Brown buddies; Malleable Charlie
Brown (Thomas Hauff), Pipe -fitting
Charlie Brown (Cliff Saunders) and
Clock Charlie Brown (Jerry
Franken), take on the devil and
some surprise curlers from the past
in a real-life rink set up on stage.
This is something to be experienced
in person to believe.
Don't go looking for
Shakespeare -style acting in this
play...but then again, it has a bit of
everything.
Dennis Fitzgerald pulls off a
suave performance as Beelzebub
with some smoke and fire special
effects which are worth mentioning.
Wullie is entertaining as the true
Presbyterian Scot who never gives
up. His Charlie Brown buddies also
add to the comedy, especially Pipe -
fitting Charlie who performs some
great physical comedy and delivers

priceless one-liners. Reverend
Pringle (Robert Persichini) plays the
skeptical clergyman who rallies
behind the forces of good and even
substitutes a few ends in the curling
match. Annie Brown (Anne Anglin)
is the stereotypical small-town
busy -body who shows up every-
where, usually as the buu of many
jokes.
If you go to Blyth Festival to be
entertained Wullie MacCrimmon is
the play you must see before this
season is over. Tell them the devil
