London grabs
first place over
St. Columban
On Wednesday, August 17, the
St. Columban Men's soccer team
played against London Curinga in a
match that would settle first place
in the division.
St. Columban opened the scoring
early in the game when Dean Mar-
tin headed his tenth goal of the
season into the net. The home
squad finished the half in control
and led 1-0 at the half way point.
In the second half St. Columban did
not fare as well and played possibly
their worst soccer of the. year.
Curinga got two quick goals mid-
way through the half and they held
on to beat St. Columban 2-1. Not
only did this shatter St. Columban's
chances of winning the division but
it also gave them their first loss
since May 7 - the first game of the
season.
On Friday, August 18, St.
Columban ventured to London to
play the Marconi club and luckily
were able to enjoy a victory. St.
Columban benefitted from three
quick goals within the first ten
minutes and held on to beat
Marconi by a 3-2 score. Steve Ryan
got the fust two goals of the game
after being set up beautifully by the
mid -fielders. Ryan's first goal was
memorable for him as it was his
200th goal by his count. To say the
team was elated would be an under-
statement. Nehru Bridna got the
third goal when he one -timed a
hard shot behind the goalkeeper.
St. Columban played poor soccer
for the rest of the game and could
have lost if not for the excellent
performance of goal helper Jason
Dietz. With under a minute left to
play, the referee awarded Marconi
a free kick just outside the eighteen
yard line. A nice hard shot that was
heading for the top corner was
blocked by Dietz and the resulting
rebound was also stopped with him
on his tail. Shortly after the referee
called the game and once again,
Dietz gave two points to fourteen
guys that were probably
undeserving.
SL Columban's next home game
is Saturday, August 27 at 5 p.m.
All are welcome.
St. Columban I
and II winners
At the end of the regular season
St. Columban I and St. Columban II
under 14 girls soccer teams had
identical records of 7 wins - 2 ties -
1 loss and therefore had to play a
League Championship Game to
decide first place. St. Columban I
played a very strong game earning
first place with a 3-1 win.
This past weekend the same two
teams faced each other in the 'A'
Championship game in Exeter as
St. Columban I had previously
eliminated a very strong Naim
squad 2-0 and St. Columban II had
defeated Exeter I by a score of 3-1.
In the championship game St.
Columban I was assisted by a stiff
wind in the first half but strong
defense by St. Columban II held the
game scoreless at the mid -way
mark.
St. Columban II had the wind
advantage in the second half and
finally scored with 20 minutes
remaining in the game. Despite
several rushes and end-to-end play
neither team scored again and St.
Columban II finished as 'A' Playoff
Champions with this 1-0 win.
With the assistance of Kendall
Schenck, Amie de Vries, Kathleen
Moylan and Melissa Robertson they
entered the St. Thomas Annual
Tournament and brought home the
Gold Medal for under 15 Girls and
the Silver Medal for under 13 girls.
