August 17, 1104 St. Columban battles for tie game On Friday, August 12, the St. Columban men's soccer team played at home against a tough London Alianza club. With exceptional playing conditions the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie. St. Columban opened up the scoring very early in the game when John Jordan moved the ball to the front of the net where Brian Melady had the ball bounce off of his head behind the Alianza goal- keeper. There was good pressure by both sides for the rest. of the half but there was no more scoring and the half ended with the good guys up one to nil. In the second half, the home team Cents begin training camp . minus 'backbone of team' The Seaforth Centenaires Junior Development league hockey club opens training camp next week with tryouts from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tues- day and Thursday nights and a 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. session on Sunday, in preparation for their first exhibi- tion the following Friday of the long weekend, September 2, a `Rookie Game' against the Brussels Bulls. General manager Gregor Campbell says he's lost the "back- bone of his team" and has major holes to fill at all positions. The best goalie in the league, all-star Dana Duskocy of Stratford, has accepted a partial baseball scholar- ship at a college in Texas and leaves Saturday. Veteran local all- stars Karston Carroll and Paul McLlwain are both now overage and perennial plugger Jamie Ramer of Zurich leaves for school out west at the end of this month. "That's a combined 16 years of junior experience right there," Campbell says, "not to mention the even greater loss in character." The Seaforth general manager says he's mailed out 130 or so invitations but it's an open camp, which means anyone can try out. Veteran Centenaires confirmed for the `Summer Showcase' exhibitions with the instructors from Dave McLlwain's local hockey school next Wednesday night at 8:30 -at the arena include: Ted Sills, Jason Bcuttenmiller, Karston and Kalen Carroll, Paul McLlwain, Scott Wright, Jason Hayter, Steve Mclnally, Joe Murray, Shawn O'Leary, Kory Dietz (Cents 90-91), Jamie Ramer and Maurice Guy. Standout goaltender Dave Nahrgang, formerly of the CCHS Redmcn, and Egmondville's Mike Weber, who plays for St. Andrews College in Toronto, have also agreed to play. Training camp prospects are reminded written permission is sometimes required for trying out with other OHA teams. This is under new OHA tampering regula- tions passed in August, 1992. came out flat footed and Alianza was able to get the tying goal around the twentieth minute. A couple of London forwards eluded the St. Columban defense and were able to work the ball behind the keeper. For the rest of the game St. Columban carried the momentum and several times came close to getting the go -ahead -goal. Their best opportunity came off of a comer kick when Dave Murray headed a nice ball towards the net but was unable to put through the crossbar. The Alianza keeper made some good saves but had to look towards the other end for pointers as St. Columban's goaltender, Jason Dietz, put on a one-person show at times and made some monumental saves. There was no more scoring in the game and it ended in a one - all tie. Despite a good offensive game by St. Columban, their defense played a solid game. The defensive unit consisting of Wayne Ryan, Mike . Murry, Mauro Mascioii, Mark Muir, Jim O'Reilly and Jason Vandervelde; quarterbacked by keeper, Jason Dietz, has helped Si Columban with the second lowest goal against in the league. They have let in only fourteen goals in 12 games thus far and probably don't get the recogni- tion they deserve. St. Columban's next game is Wednesday, August 17 in Mitchell at 7 p.m. against a tough London Curinga team. Curinga will be looking to avenge their first loss of the season last weekend that was administered by the feet of St. Columban. The game should stand to be one of the better games of the season and all attending fans who are disappointed not only will receive their money back but will also get a free set of steak knives to take home for that special someone. Leading scorers for the team after 12 games are: Brian Melady - 13; Dean Martin - 9; Mark Martinez - 6; Dave Murray - 4; and Steve Ryan -4.
