As tears filled the man's eyes, the singer reached out and held his hand for a moment. Deeply touching audiences has become predictable the four singers and a keyboardist who perform in the Huron Country Playhouse's Outreach 1994, a brand new musi- cal show travelling to homes for the aged and other venues. "It's very fulfilling work," said singer Christian Jeffrey. "Some of these people don't even remember their names but they remember these tunes. Alzheimer patients respond. They have no memory but they remember these songs." Director Carl Zvonkin said his vision for the show was to reach people who cannot make it to the playhouse. "The Outreach program is for those people who traditionally can't get to theatre. We are taking theatre to them. That's the whole philos- ophy behind it --to make these people happy." The response to the show has greatly surpassed the director's expectations. His planned eight - venue tour ballooned to a 21 -stop circuit lasting from August 8-19. "I just came up with the idea last fall. I planned on eight venues and I had them in a week. I left for Florida for the winter, then I got a call from Mitchell and other places. I have no idea how they heard about the show. I finally had to cut it off at twenty-one shows. It's just a pilot project and now we know it's going to work," he said. The secret of the show's success PAUL QUM PHOTO THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES - Soprano Mai-Liis Todd sings the vaudeville tune 'I Never Cried So Much' for residents of Seaforth Manor on August 11. The Outreach '94 concert stirred up many memories for the elderly audience. is appealing to the intended audi- ence, Zvonkin said. "We have few props and don't need any lights. It's very simple. It's good solid Broadway music like Gilbert and Sullivan. It's music which the people can identify with, music they know and remember. Even if they don't know the music, it's still bright and bouncy. We close-, every show with Auld lang syne and we have people standing up and singing. That's what we want. The show is -'also short enough to maintain their interest and it leaves them wanting more. It leaves them laughing." He also gives a lot of credit to singers Jeffrey, Melodie Shannon, Mai-Liis Todd, Laurence Gauci, and pianist Steven Gauci. "It's a show with young people. They're actors, professionals --not novices. They know how to deliver a piece, how to r't and react in front of an audience. That's the kind of thing people want to see," PAUL CIUFO PHOTO TEDDY BEAR FLOAT - Brittany Flanagan, 4, gets help decorating her float for the Teddy Bear Picnic parade on Friday from her mother Joanne, sister Cassidy, 2, and Maria Hill, 7 months.
