St. Columban tied for first On Monday, August 1, the St. Columban's Men's Soccer team played at home against London United and the home squad earned a 1-0 victory. The game started very slowly as the effects of the long weekend took its toll on the St. Columban squad and the first half ended in a scoreless tie. In the St. Columban offense and they were able to hit net with approximately 30 minutes left in the game. After being awarded a free kick close to centre, Dave Murray put a nice cross into the eighteen -yard box where Dean Martin was waiting to head his seventh goal of the season into the net. For the remainder of the game, the home team pushed yard and the match ended with the right guys on top. On Sunday, August 7, St. Columban would venture to London to play first -place London Curinga. Going into the game, St. Columban carried a three month, ten -game Perth County Plowing Match August 27 Warden Robert Mathers will be hosting the 1994 Perth County Plowing Match on Saturday, August 27. this year's event will be held on Carson's Farms - cast of Listowel on Highway 86. 4000GG1iGatIGcG1aGGOtaa 'Huron County's Complete VEHICLE 1 RENTAL Headquarters n Small & Mid-sized Cars n Passenger & Cargo Vans, Pickup Trucks n Daily, Weekly, Monthly n insurance Rentals & More n Free Delivery ( Ask about our full ca ci transportation service (11 (11u CAR & TRUCK RENTALS Division of Suncoast Ford 500 Huron Rd., Goderich CALL COLLECT ARk for Helen 524-8347 nmerev +teeeeeeeeeeee em unbeaten streak and with a win would move into a first place tie with their opposition. The Curinga squad came out early and drew first blood when a quick London striker slipped past St. Columban's defense and put the ball behind Jason Dietz, the defenceless goalkeeper. Despite some good opportunities in the first half, St. Columban was unable to respond and the half ended with London leading 1-0. Entering the second half the visitors knew they had an uphill battle as Curinga as only allowed nine goals in ten games thus far this season and St. Columban would need a pair of goals if they wished to realize a first -place position. It would be ten minutes into the second half when Dean Martin would take the visitors one step closer to this accomplish- ment when he received a ball due to the hard work of Nehru Budna and Dave Murray. Martin simply punched the ball into the corner of the net and the game -was tied. Not being pleased with only one goal, St. Columban came right back and within two minutes took the lead. Due to some good work by the defence, Brian Melady received the ball outside of the eighteen yard box and put a hard shot on the net. The goalkeeper was unable to handle the ball and Dean Martin and Steve Ryan dug the rebound out which enabled Melady to finish the play with a ball inside the cor- ner. The team held on for the rest of the game and in the end were able to celebrate a first place birth at the top of Second Division. An excellent team effort with some promising games by veterans Dave Murray and Dean Martin put the team exactly where they deserve to be at the top. St. Columban's next game is on Friday, August 12 in Mitchell at 7 p.m. All fans are invited and most welcome to attend.
