The Huron Expositor, 1994-08-03, Page 611-THR HURON IXPOSITOR, August 3, 1994 J Briefly Area native farms ostriches in Canadian west A Seaforth-area native is busy farming in Oakville, Manitoba...but he's not growing wheat or raising cattle. He's raising ostriches. Bruce Glanville, son of Seaforth's Fred and Viola Glanville, is starting an ostrich breeding farm with five ostriches. The Manitoba trucker, and his wife Grace, are planning a bam and fenced running area. They expect to breed chicks to be sold to other ostrich farmers. Ostrich meat is high in protein and low in cholesterol, according to the family, and ostrich leather is also useable. Bruce Glanville attended No. 9 school in McKillop and later attended Seaforth and Mitchell high schools. He has been in Manitoba for about 22 years. Local golfers perform well in tournament David Hiltz, who golfs at Seaforth Golf and Country Club, shot a score of 81 in the 15-17 age class of the All -Ontario Optimist District Championships recently. It was the third-highest score in the class. Jason Henderson, of Seaforth, scored an 88 in the same class, placing him in the top half of entries at the tourna- ment. The Huron County 4-H Leader's Association, with the help of 4-H members, has been busy collecting old lead/acid batteries from vehicles and equipment as a fundraiser. "We need to raise funds because the county is cutting back on grants," said Gerda Vanden Hoven, chairperson of the 4-1-1 battery recycling com- mittee. The battery recycling project, called the 'Battery Blitz will raise funds for such projects as the 4-1-1 Awards Night. Old lead/acid batteries are 98 per cent recyclable. As well as raising money the 'Battery Blitz' is a project which is "cleaning up the environment, making the world a safer place." Used vehicle and equipment batteries can be a hazard, said Vanden Hoven. "There are a lot of baueries sitting around in farms ane, sheds...those arc hazardous." A program similar to the 'Bat- tery Blitz' was successful in Oxford County. Old lead/acid batteries donated to 4-11 were left at five drop-off locations of these local busi- nesses: •Vincent Farm Equipment, near Seaforth. •McGavin Farm Equipment, Walton. •Townsend Tire, Londesboro. • Becker Farm Equipment, Exeter. • Lucknow Co-op, Lucknow.
