Pirates hit, miss in Festival show
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Staff
All hands on stage. The fun -lov-
ing Pirates of Penzance are afloat
at Stratford's Festival Theatre this
season. In a modern adaptation of
Gilbert and Sullivan's singing sailor
story, film producer Max Meisner
brings together a touring British
theatre company and a masochistic
German film director, Heinrich Von
Schtompinc, to create a musical
movie version of Pirates of
Penzance.
This cinematic framework sets the
production sailing and allows for a
few more laughs and special effects
to be incorporated into the original
musical.
The story is of Frederic, who was
mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate
king and his crew as a child by his
nursemaid, Ruth. Now that he's 21
Frederic is about to be set free into
the real world but makes it his duty
to come back and destroy his for-
mer shipmates.
The older Ruth has fallen in love
with the handsome Frederic (Robert
Yeretch). He has, however, become
enraptured by the lovely Mabel
(Aggie Cekuta Elliot), one of
Major-General Stanley's many
daughters. Elliot's voice is hypnot-
izing, even when doing comedy
numbers her pitch is flawless.
Yeretch plays a convincingly naive
and bashfully comedic Frederic.
Like the motion of a ship on the
high seas this production has its
high moments and low moments.
Its up and down pace can lull you
almost asleep...Until the arrival of
characters like Major-General Stan-
ley (Douglas Chamberlain) and
movie director Heinrich Von
Schtompinc (Tom Wood) who blast
on to the stage like a pair of crash-
ing cymbals. Both of these flam-
boyant characters add some spark to
an elaborate production that some-
times sinks with drawn-out songs or
worn-out jokes

Blyth announces
new play fund
On the opening night of the
20th Anniversary Season the
Blyth Festival announced the
establishrhi;ht •of The Roulston-ou
Roy Play Development Fund.
The fund will be specifically
directed towards the creation and
development of new scripts by
Canadian writers with a particu-
lar view towards possible pro-
duction on the Blyth stage.
The Roulston Roy Play Devel-
opment Fund is being inaugur-
ated in the 20th Anniversary
Season to recognize and honour
James Roy, Keith Roulston and
Anne Roy, the Founders of the
Festival. Me mandate for new
play development at Blyth began
with the first season, in 1975,
when James and Keith chose to
take the considerable risk of
presenting a new Canadian play
Mostly in Clover, based on the
work of Huron County native
Harry J.S. Bolye. Over the ensu-
ing two decades over 65 new
Canadian works have premiered
on the stage of Blyth Memorial
Community Hall. The establish-
ment of this fund will enable the
Festival to pursue its truly
unique mandate of developing
and presenting our own stories
on stage well into the future.
Anyone interested in contribut-
ing to The Roulston Roy Play
Development Fund may do so by
contacting Lynda Lentz, Devel-
opment Co-ordinator, Blyth
Festival, P.O. Box 10, Blyth,
Ontario NOM 1 HO (519)523-

be issued.

PIRATE PEER PRESSURE - The Pirate King (CoIm Feore), right,
tells Frederic (Robert Yeretch), left, it's his duty to rejoin the
pirates after it's discovered Frederic was born on Feb. 29 of a
leap year and is actually five and a half years old instead of 21.
(photo by Cylla Von Tiedemann, courtesy Stratford Festival).
the 27th time someone is hit over
the head with a billy -club.
Colm Feore is the funny and
fearless Pirate King. As in his lead
role in Cyrano de Ber$erac Feore
plays a physicall•i demanding part
that has him leapng, lunging, roll-
ing and dancing across the stage.
Particularly funny is the sexy tango -
like dance number he performs with
the seemingly quiet, book -worm
daughter of the Major-General.
The pirates attempt to carry off
the many daughters of the monocle -
wearing Major-General but the
mass marriage ceremony is averted
by the pleas of the girls' father who
untruthfully claims he is an orphan
- who can't be harmed under the
pirates' code of honour.
Frederic finds out he must return
to the pirate ship after it's revealed
he was born on February 29 of a
leap year and is only five and a
quarter years old instead of 21.
The pirates find out through
Frederic of the Major-Gen(•ral's lie
and raid his residence wh..re they
clash with the local police who look
like they belong in a Chaplin film.
As in all happy musicals there is
a happy ending when it is dis-
covered that there is a royal, blue -
blood connection with the pirates
and they aren't such bad guys after
all. So the Major-General gains
many sons-in-law and the movie
version of Pirates is complete. But
not without a few parting jokes
from the fanatical Heinrich Von
Schtompinc.
