Soccer squad wins, ties
On Sunday, July 10, St.
Columban played in Exeter against
the close -to -basement Exeter Cen-
tenials. This should have been an
easy victory for the team but fate
was against them on this day and
they had to settle for a scoreless tie.
The mid-day heat and a two week
layoff took Its toll on St. Columban
and they played substandard soccer.
Late in the game, frustration set in
and two players were ejected from
die game within aspan often min-
utes. The nine guys on the field
finished the game with class and
were able to preserve at least one
point for the visitors. An excellent
game and some monumental saves
by St. Columban keeper, Jason
Dietz, sweetened the final score a
bit as a Toss to Exeter would have
been more than hard to swallow.
St. Columban would play again in
Exeter on Tuesday, July 12 but this
time would be against the much
more skilled, Exeter Fury. Because
this was a cup game, any tie would
have to be broken and this game
proved to be one of the most excit-
ing games in the team's short his-
tory.
The score opened mid -way
through the first half when some
good ball control by Joe Murray
enabkd him to put a cross to the
centre of the net. A head ball by
Brian Melady was stopped by the
keeper but Melady hopped on his
own rebound and put the ball into
the net, making it 1-0 for the good
guys. Exeter would tie the game
with a few minutes left in the first
half when they caught St.
Columban's defence sleeping on a
freekick. The first half ended in a
1-1 tie.
St. Columban came out hard in
the second half and -carried most of
the play. Twenty minutes in, John
Jordan made no mistake by putting
a hard shot off of the post and
behind the Exeter keeper. St.
Columban would be unable to hold
on to the lead and gave up a poor
goal with some sloppy passing.
