Team prepares for provincials
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Staff
With a 20 -win and one -loss
record for the season, the Seaforth
Novice II girls fastball team defi-
nitely looks prepared for the provin-
cial qualifying tournament in
Chatham in two weeks time. The
team doesn't play in a regular
league. The team is a member of
the Provincial Women's Softball
Association and play exhibition
games and tournaments.
"All the players play on other
teams," said coach Georgina
Reynolds. "Some are missing
games because we're preparing for
the provincials." Reynolds coaches
the Novice II girls along with Janet
Buchanan, Sandra Burns and Kathy
O'Reilly, who together have years
of softball experience in both play-
ing and coaching.
This season the Novice II team
placed second in the Dorothy Hill
Tournament in London where they
lost their only game of the season
to Windsor. "A lot of teams we're
going to meet at the provincial
qualifiers we've seen in tourna-
ments. We meet Windsor in the
second game in Chatham," said
Reynolds. In order to compete in
the provincials the Novice II team
has to finish first, second or third in
the qualifying tournament in
Chatham.
The Seaforth girls fastball team
also won the tournament in
Burlington recently. It's not just
small towns they're facing either.
The Novice II team has played and
beat teams from Aurora, Guelph,
London, Whitby and Niagara Falls.
"I think the city teams sometimes
take us for granted," said Reynolds.

Clinton, Goderich and Brussels.
Some of the players have been
together on teams for several years.
Reynolds said the team is always
on the lookout for good players and
actively scouts the area. She says
players "have to make a commit-
ment" to the team.
The Seaforth players on the team
include Denise O'Reilly, Melissa
Robertson, Lisa Reynolds, Michelle
Henderson, Starla Wick and Tricia
Jansen. Other area players are: Kara
Pepper, Brussels; Ericka Burns,
Clinton; Lisa Roosenboom, Hensall;
Tory Westbrook, Goderich; Kristen
McFarlane, Palmerston; Jamie
Reaburn, Hensall; Amber Ruttan,
Brussels and Kim Taylor, Hensall.
On Monday night the Novice II
girls played an exhibition game
against a Tier 1 team from
Harriston. Seaforth is ranked as a
Tier 2 team. Seaforth put up a good
fight against the higher ranked team
but lost 9-7 in the end. The Novice
R team also went through their
entire pitching staff in the game
since their regular pitcher is sick
and they didn't want to wear her
out. The Seaforth girls fastball team
heads to Simcoe this weekend for a
one -day tournament. Then it's off
to the provincial qualifiers the fol-
lowing weekend.
Squirts improving from 1993.
The Seaforth Squirt boys fastball
team playing in the South Perth
league have turned their 1993
learning experience _ (2 wins, 17
losses, 1 tie) into a successful
season to date in 1994.
There season record sits at 9
wins, 5 losses. The coaches and
players are sure three of those
losses could have been avoided as
defensive lapses turned 5-1 and 3-0
leads against first place Stratford
(11-1) into one extra inning loss (6-
5) and a last at bat defeat (4-3).
The other sure fire win slipped
away in St. Marys when a runner
already at third failed to score on a
triple by a teammate and some late
inning defensive faux pas were our
undoing.
Saturday, July 9, the boys were
off to Simcoe for a one day
tournament. In game one
Willowdale provided the opposition
and the wake call. We batted first
and scored in the top of the first on
a walk, a stolen base and a run -
scoring single by Shaun White who
also singled in the third inning. In
the bottom of the first starting
pitcher Derek Nesbitt and the
defense sat them down 1-2-3.
In the second A.J. Larivee drilled
a double to right field which Brad
Murray rode home on after walking
giving Seaforth a 2-0 lead. That's
where the fun ended. The bottom of
the second became our worst inning
of the tournament and the season as
we came complete unglued.
Willowdale scored 7 runs on 5 hits
(three which never left the infield),
one walk, and only 2 recorded
errors, but four mental errors. The
big surprise was only one walk. As
we have gotten into trouble in the
past via the free pass. The final
score was Willowdale 10 - Seaforth
2. Willowdale finished the game
with six hits and continued on in
the tournament only to be edged in
the "A" final by Bramalea 7-6.
Willowdale pitcher Joe German was
named the tournament M.V.P.
On to the "B" side and the boys

call with vengeance as they

team 8-0. Dan O'Reilly started and
completed five innings of 1 -hit ball
while striking out 13 and walking
only one batter. The best part of the
offence occurred in the fourth when
Seaforth used four hits and four
walks to get seven runs to seal the
victory and a place in the "B" final.
Tim McClure played the igniter in
this game with three hits while
Derek Akey collected two singles.
Simcoe, the hometown favourite,
provided some tough competition in
the final as both teams banged out
seven hits, only three walks over
the full seven inning final. We
scored early, 1-0 after one, and 3-0
after two innings while Simcoe got
one back in the third. Seaforth
broke it open in the fourth with
three runs on four hits while
sending only six men to the plate,
for a 6-1 lead.
In by far the best game we have
played all year, the boys used speed
and aggressive base running along
with three singles, Derek Nesbitt
(double and single), Shaun White a
double and Josh White a single.
Excellent defense was the key to
victory as second baseman Ryan
Willis kept the infield pumped up
while Jason Anstett got the outfield
involved with some smart play. Dan
O'Reilly went the distance on the
mound giving up only two walks
while striking out five batters.
Once again, the defensive play in
the final by everybody was
outstanding as the boys level of
confidence rose throughout the day.
The long hot, wind swept day
ended when the boys received there
individual trophies for "B" champs.
Seaforth was left out of the
individual award presentations (eg.
M.V.P., top batter, top pitcher, and
top catcher) which was a good
indication as to the all around team
play the boys displayed.
Team members are: Tim
McClure, Ryan Willis, Derek Akey,
Dan O'Reilly, Derek Nesbitt, A.J.
Larivee, Jason Anstett, Josh Dale,
Matt Flanagan, Brad Murray, Mike
Thibert, Kevin Brown, and Dean
Wood (absent). Coaches - Graham
Nesbitt, Neil Murray and Murray
McClure.
