Valedictory Address
By Amy Wood and
Ryan Munn
Amy and I are happy to give the
valedictory address for our Grade 8
graduating class this year. Over the
years we have had the chance to
get to know each other well
because many of us have been
together from Kindergarten to
Grade 8. We are a small graduating
class but we share many good
memories of our years as students.
For those who joined our class
recently they have been part of our
special Grade 8 happenings. Not
many students are able to have
their Grade one teacher at their
Grade 8 Graduation. We're pleased_
to have Mrs. Strang here this
evening. She introduced us to the
joy of reading and we still love to
read today.
We've seen many changes at
Hensall Public School. We have
had different principals, teachers
and students who have come and
gone through the years. We have
also had many changes to our
school building. Mrs. Moffatt's
philosophy is that teamwork, co-
operation and doing your best arc
important! During the last few
years we have really worked on
this and we are better - not perfect,
but almost. We can certainly say
that our school has many improve-
ments. We arc very proud of our
new addition, new computerized
library, bright and cheery paint, our
improved landscaping with new
trees and flower beds, and new
playground equipment. This is the
way we want to remember our
school.
Our teachers have really helped
us a lot to prepare us for the next
level of education. For Mrs.
Beattie we wrote stories, stories
and stories and she encouraged us
to participate in sports and try out
for the school teams. For Mr. Snell.
we sang and sang and sang. He
taught us to love music. Merci-
bcaucoup Ms. Becker - you helped
us to learn and enjoy French -

maybe we can plan our next trip to
France. And then there's Mr.
Rideout, our resident Ncwfie
expert, who has taught us through
hard work and perseverance, to be
responsible, to study and to work
hard. Some of us are still working
on this, Mr. Rideout. We thank you
very much for helping to prepare
us for Grade 9. We also owe much
to our parents who have been there
to guide and support us through the
years.
There are advantages to attending
a small school because you know

school. You also get individual

attention.
An education is an on-going
experience for everyone. Even
though we sometimes groan and
complain about school we think we
all realize how important sctiool is
to us. If it weren't for the wonder-
ful staff that helped us the gradua-
tion of this class wouldn't be possi-
ble. There is no way we can thank
those people enough. We wish
Mrs. Moffatt the very best in her
retirement and also wish Mr.
Rideout well in his new position as
vice-principal.
Now as we look to the future we
can make use of the skills we have
learned in elementary school. Yes,
we have learned how to read and
write and do mathematical prob-
lems and we've learned about the
history of Canada and the geogra-
phy of the world. We know how to
solve problems without violence,
how to get along with others and
how to make good choices and
wise decisions. Now all we have to
do is practice these skills so that
we can have many positive and
happy years ahead of us.
Good luck and best wishes to all
the students in the graduating class
of 1994.

Father Cassano, Mr. McDade, Mr.
McCarroll, Parents and Fellow
Graduates.
It's hard to believe that 9 years
have passed since most of us met in
September 1985 in Kindergarten.
Some members of our original class
have moved to different schools,
but we have been fortunate enough
to have other students move to this
area to make up this graduating
class of '94.
This year has been one of the best
for our class, the graduating
students of St. James School. It has
been filled with excitement,
wonder, and most of all, happiness.
Mr. McCarroll has played a large
part in making this year
tremendous. He has given us his
unending patience and dedication
throughout the whole year and he
has prepared us for other challenges
in our lives. He has enhanced our
self discipline and our self respect.
He has taught us more than math,
science, english and drama; he has
taught us about how to live life!
We are fortunate to have had him
for out teacher this year.
Mr. McDade's arrival at St. James
$chool in September has had a
positive impact on all of the
students. He has brought with him
not only leadership skills, but also a
strong sense of Christian values
which he shows to us each and
every day. He, with all the other
teachers make St. -James a fun place
to be, and a safe place to be.
Father Cassano, you have given
us a stronger faith during our years
at St. James. You have enhanced
our spirituality and given us
Christian values. Thank -you for
your prayers and concem. Please
continue to pray for us as we move
on to another part of our lives. We
also wish you well as you move on
to St. Martin's in London. Our
prayers are with you.
I think all of my classmates will
agree that we owe much of our
appreciation to our parents. They
have guided us to this point in our
lives and have been there for us in
times of happiness and sorrow. I
also know that this is a time for
mixed feelings and emotion for
them as well. They see us moving
from the secure, comfortable

time in our lives where we take on
more responsibility for the decisions
we make, and the friends we meet.
With the love and support they
have shown us, I'm sure that we
are well prepared for new
experiences.
We will remember each
individual graduate for their own
values. We will remember Taum
Bannon, for going fishing and not
catching a single thing.
Amanda Denys, for her laugh that
sounds like a horse.
Mike Grobbink, for his
tremendously large family.
Irene Gubelmann, for being so
very shy and quiet.
Michelle Henderson, for all her
injuries.
Gerry Holland, for being the
"king" of electronic games.
Barry Medd, for playing road
hockey.
Kristie Moran, for going to the
trailer every weekend.
Nick Marshall, for going with this
dad on trips in the big truck.
Nike Nigh, for playing jokes on
people.
Dean Price, for going to teen

Mark Phillips, for bringing

Harold Saddler, for running into

and...puttin' in hours at the shop.
Tim Sills, for his awesome
dancing and his irresistibility.
Bill Thibert, for his CHA-CHA!
Scott Van Dooren, for his

Mike Van Bakel, for his great
acting.
Rob Vanden Hoven, for helping
out on the farm.
Marianne Vanden Hengel, for
always acing tests.
Joe Vanden Hengel, for his
craving of subs.
And of course Mr. McCarroll, for
his 'green' book!
Our trip to Cypress Lake was the
highlight o_ f the year. This
allowed us to reflect upon the great
friendships we have established, and
the wonderful times we have had at
St. James. We also discovered that
Mr. McCarrol seems to have a
strange preference for Stompin'
Tom Connors music.
One of my classmates gave me
this poem which I would like to
recite.
At graduation we all grog' ne rec,'
' 'And all' or dtir fii6irdajWrir s
much dearer.
As we say our friendly good-bye,
One last embrace and one last cry.
A "keep in touch" and .a
"promise I will,"
A "remember when" but better still,
A place in my heart
you'll always stay,
This is what's said as we go
our own way.
Faces of old, faces of new,
People we know and people
that we knew.
Growing up together,
then drifting apart,
Always ending and
then a new start.
The friendships and strength
shared between the graduates of St.
James will remain close to us all
for the rest of our lives. Now as we
all go our separate ways we'll
always remember our fun,
happiness, and excitement here at
St. James. Our memories will
always live on.
Thank you.
