July S. 1104 News and Views Cutbacks affect operation BY TIM CUMMING EXPOS/10r Editor Seaforth's hospital is entering a period of change with government cutbacks, long-term care and employment equity legislation and health care planning by a district council. "The loss of approximately $300,000 in operational funding due •to government cutbacks and budget reallocations will place additional strain on our hospital operations," • said Bill Thibert, Chief Executive Officer, in his report to the 65th annual meeting of Seaforth Com- munity Hospital on June 28. Despite the climate of change the hospital is ready to meet the chal- lenges, he said. "I'm confident in our ability and I look forward to our accomplish- ments in the upcoming year," he said. The hospital was able to maintain a balanced budget despite increased patient activity in many departments and the loss of tens of thousands of dollars in government funding, said Thibert. He expressed pride that the hospital was able to keep its budget balanced without imposing employee layoffs or unpaid Social Contract days. The hospital's interest in estab- lishing a blood bank at the facility is an indication of its commitment to comprehensive health care ser- vices, he said in his report. The chairperson of the hospital's Board of Directors, Marlen Vincent, said the hospital looks forward to construction of a medical heliport on the hospital property sometime this year. The board chairperson noted the hospital had welcomed new staff member, Dr. Heather Percival, and the hospital had improved its surgi- cal program by purchasing new surgical and anaesthesia equipment. He said the hospital had upgraded its major Operating Room and he thanked the Hospital Auxiliary for purchasing the new lighting system. He also thanked the Seaforth Legion Branch 156 and Seaforth Optimist Club for significant dona- tions as well as thanking the com- munity at large for other bequests and donations. The annual meeting named Mike Hak, Alf Ross and Fran Hook to new three-year terms on the Board of Directors.
