The Huron Expositor recently had a chance to speak with Dave about his upcoming second season with the Ottawa Senators. What does Dave personally want to achieve this season? "I think personally you always want to better what you had the year before and obviously try to stay injury -free and have a success- ful season. As a team I think we can only go up from where we were, obviously, and be a little more competitive game in and game out. We finished 20 points behind the next team which is something you're not really happy about." Ottawa is definitely a team loaded with young talent. The Senators recently picked up 17 -year old Radek Bonk who was a star with Las Vegas in the IHL (International Hockey League) in the 1993-94 season. He was the third overall pick in the recent NHL draft in Hartford. "They thought he might have been gone by the time we picked. The talent will definitely be there," said McLlwain. "I think confidence -wise we have a lot of good, young kids as long as they start realizing you can win hockey games instead of coming in with a bad attitude about last sea- son. I think you can to drill it into everyone's mind that you are a good hockey team and you can win any night. The league is so bal- anced now that anybody can win different nights. If the kids get that confidence they can win. Maybe they'll carry that on." What about the San Jose Sharks doing so well in the NHL playoffs and surprising everyone with an expansion team that really didn't have any superstars? "I think it's something we can look at. They did it and hopefully we can be in a similar type of situation. They added a few players that I think really helped them - a couple Russians that brought some experience and leadership. I think that spreads throughout the team. You want to be as good as the guys you're playing with. So we'll try to get off to a good start and try to, be a little more consistent throughout the season instead of winning three and losing four. It's tough to get anywhere when you're doing that." How did Dave enjoy his first season in Ottawd? "The fan support was definitely there. They were pretty patient with us throughout the season. You can only use that 'we're a young team' excuse for so long. I'm sure they'll be demanding a little more every year. As players you have to have that demand on yourself as well to See McLlwain page 18 111111th Beginning July 4th 1994..: Knechtel Knows... ■ EMI MEEl ■® MEM INN IN Knechtel Knows you've got a budget.
