BY TIM CUMMING

The principal of Seaforth District
High School will be leaving the
local institution to become Superin-
tendent of Schools.
Ralph Wareham, who has been
SDHS principal for 2V years,
replaces the retiring Arnold
Mathers. He will be responsible for
the schools in the northern part of
Huron County.
Wareham has served in every
high school in Huron County except
Goderich District Collegiate Insti-
tute.
"I've spent essentially my whole
career in education in Huron," he
said in an interview last week.
Wareham said he had never had a
job in education which he didn't
like but that he enjoyed his position
asa,Principal at the Seaforth school
more than anything he had done in
education.
"There are certainly mixed emo-
tions about leaving SDHS," he said.
"The highlight has been working
here in this community, with the
staff in this school and the tremen-
dous group of kids we have in this
community."
The principal expressed surprise
at being asked to fill the new post.
"Ralph was selected from an
excellent group of candidates from
across the province," said Graeme
Craig, chairperson of the Huron
County Board of Education.
Wareham started his teaching
career in Huron County in late
1968. Prior to teaching he had
served in the military service as
Flight Lieutenant in the Royal
Canadian Air Force.
As Superintendent of Schools the
Exeter resident will have responsi-

Teaching often requires leader-

SDHS as a positive blend of experi-
ence and youth.
"We have a lot of talent on this
staff," he said.
Wareham graduated from South
Huron District High School in
1961, having spent his high school
years in Ontario and most of his
elementary school years in New-
foundland.
The Newfoundland -born superin-
tendent has a degree in chemistry
from Western University and a
Masters degree in education through
the University of New York.
The introduction of a Roman
Catholic high school in Huron
provides a challenge to the public
board of education, said Wareham.
"That will affect enrolment," he
said. "Our public secondary
schools, we've got to make the
community aware of the excellence
which is provided in schools like
SDHS."
Graduates of Huron County high
schools have gone on to success in
many fields and some have become
senior corporate executives, he said.
Technology offers another chal-
lenge for the school system.
The new principal at Seaforth
District High School will be Jim
Moore, of Seaforth. He is a former
teacher and vice-principal of SDHS.

animals tended during labour negotiations.
• Family members cannot be prevented from working on the farm by collective
agreements.

on farm labour reforms and educational programs through a labour/management
committee.
