Entertainment
Cyrano rivals screen versions
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Staff
Whatever you do, don't mention
his nose. (Oops!) Cyrano de
Bergerac is a man whose reputation
(and nose) precede him. But his
enormous nasal protuberance is
actually just a small part of his
amazing and dazzling character.
"Whether he's taking on a hun-
dred armed ruffians or composing a
poem while fighting a duel, he
takes pride in his `panache;' an
attitude of willful defiance symbol-
ized by the white plume he wears
in his hat," writes David Prosser of
the Stratford Festival.
Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the
most exciting plays to hit the stage
at Stratford in years.
It has every ingredient of a suc-
cessful performance - elaborate
sword fight and battle scenes, acro-
batics, actors wandering through the
audience, romance, comedy, drama.
Cyrano de Bergerac is an endearing
`beauty and the beast' tale of
missed love and perseverance of
live.
Audiences are familiar with the
modern Hollywood adaption,
Roxanne, starring Steve Martin. The
original story contains even more of
the comic wit and flare of Cyrano
but with no Hollywood ending. But
this stage version might even out -
duel the 1950 film version with
Josd Ferrer or 1990 version with
Gerrard Depardieu.
A very strong and moving per-
formance by Colm Feore in the lead
role as the man with the quick
sword, sharp wit and...(we won't
mention it). Martha Burns does an
adequate job as Roxanne but lacks
the `panache' that fuels her secret
admirer Cyrano.
Praise should go to fight director
John Stead and former National
Ballet principal dancer, Veronica
Tennant, who helps with choreogra-
phy. The authentic costumes are
also deserving of compliment.
Cyrano promises to protect and
befriend Christian de Neuvillette, a
handsome but not -so -bright young

comic performance. Credit should
also go to Nicholas Pennell who
plays the conniving Comte de
Guiche, Cyrano's commanding
officer, who has dishonourable
designs on Roxanne. He plays the
dislikeable character you end up
liking or at least tolerating.
All minor criticisms aside, Cyrano
de Bergerac is an excellent after-
noon or evening of entertainment
for all ages. It's a perfect example
of what Strafford Festival does best
- entertain audiences with quality
live theatre.
