Speaker talks on Loyalists
At the June meeting of the Huron killed.
Co. Branch, Ontario Genealogy
Society Donna Nicholson intro-
duced the speaker for the evening.
Ron Makin of Richmond Hill,
spoke about United Empire Loyal-
ists. Ron began by giving a general
picture of the Loyalists. He said the
Loyalists were by no means all
British but were colonists opposed
to the Revolution which began at
Lexington Green in 1775 and ended
in 1781. Any colonist known to be
opposed to the Revolution was
forced off his land by the Rebels
and often harassed, tortured or
The speaker delighted his audi-
ence with his enthusiasm, showed
books which had helped him in his
own research.

Arena board increases
fees for Hockey School
The Seaforth arena board has
increased the ice fees for the Dave
McLlwain Hockey School against
the requests of its organizers.
Seaforth native Dave McLlwain,
NHL hockey player, and Graham
Nesbitt, arena manager, made a
presentation to the Seaforth and
District Community Centres Man-
agement Committee on May 19 and
suggested the Dave McLlwain
Hockey School be eliminated from
the operations of the facility and the
budget, and be treated as a regular
renter of ice time and halls.
McLlwain and Nesbitt suggested
the ice time rate for summer hockey
school be set at 108 per cent of the
prime rate (or $85 per hour. The
1994-95 prime ice rate is $81 per
hour. Minor sports rate is $60.75
per hour). The arena manager pres-
ented an information sheet stating
the facility used $690 more hydro
during the month the hockey school
operated last year than the arena
used in February of this year.
The 1994 arena budget contained
a provision for an ice rental rate of
$95 per hour plus a share of the
hockey school profit up to $2,000.
McLlwain and Nesbitt left the
meeting and the Board went into
Committee of the Whole at 9 p.m.
and reconvened at 9:30 p.m.
The board passed a motion stating
"the Dave McLlwain Hockey
School be treated as any other
leasor and the summer ice rental
rate (or hockey school rate) be set
at $100 per hour, and all other
reference and obligations concern-
ing the Dave McLlwain Hockey
School be deleted from the budget."
McLlwain and Nesbitt again left
the meeting to consider the Board's
offer. They retumed at 10:40 p.m.
and offered the Board $85 per hour
for summer ice and in addition
offered to make a donation to the
Board of $1,440, provided a receipt
was issued. The matter was dis-
cussed at length. McLlwain and
Nesbitt finally agreed to pay $100
per hour for summer ice.
