The Association is a non-profit organization operating solely by the hard work and dedication of volunteers, states the letter of request to the Town of Seaforth. The letter includes a breakdown of registration for soccer from 1993 by local towns and town- ships: McKillop Twp.- 69, Hibbert Twp. - 36, Seaforth - 28, Tuckersmith Twp. - 22, Mitchell - 18, Logan Twp. - 12, for a total of 185 participants. COACHING AWARD PRESENTED - Doug Anstett, President of the Seaforth Minor Hockey Association, presents Bill Weber, of Egmondville, with a coaching recognition award. Local coach honoured for teaching skills, values BY TIM CUMMING Expositor Editor When Bill Weber was taking his Level 4 coaching at the University of Waterloo Pat Bums was in the same class. While Bums has gone on to a six -figure salary with the Toronto Maple Leafs Weber has continued to volunteer as a minor hockey coach in Seaforth. On June 15 the Egmondville man was rewarded with a 3-M Recogni- tion Award, honouring his work with the Novice II hockey team as well as his coaching of past Bantam and Pee Wee teams to all -Ontario championships. The award was presented at the Seaforth and District Community Centres by Doug Anstett, President of the Seaforth Minor Hockey Association. "He was instrumental in starting our house league system," said Anstett, after the award presenta- tion. "Giving out an award like this is very prestigious because Seaforth is such a hockey town." The 3-M Coach Recognition Awards are presented in association with the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and the Coaching Asso- ciation of Canada. The awards recognize the role the coach plays in the formation of the moral and lifestyle values as well as the physi- cal capabilities of Canadian youth and reflects the respect the coach has earned in the community. The local award was recom- mended by the Seaforth Minor Hockey Association. Bill Weber said he was surprised to receive the award but it seems fitting the prize would go to some, one who first started coaching at the age of sixteen. "I've always Iikcd working with kids," he said. The award recipient describes his coaching style as 'firm and fair.' "I think sports and hockey are a medium for teaching values," he said. "I expect the teams I coach to play as well as they can, I like them to overachieve." The 3-M award winner has a long history of hockey behind the bench and on the ice. He played Junior B and Junior C hockey in Waterloo and Elmira respectively. He played university hockey at Wilfrid Laurier and the University of Waterloo. He has also helped to coach with Hockey Ontario including working with Tom Watt on the under 17 hockey camp which featured such future stars as Kirk Muller. Children today benefit from cli- nics and 'more thoughtful coach- ing,' said Weber. The Central Huron teacher stresses that minor hockey and professional hockey are two differ- ent models of sports. He said one can admire the skill level of the pro game but it should be evaluated critically. Professional hockey is an enter- tainment business so we have to be careful in minor hockey not to hold professional sports up as a model," he said. "it's not there for the same reasons we are." "Our soccer program differs slightly from other municipal- ities, as every child that registers plays on a travel team. There are no player cuts as in hockey. Funding for operating our organ- ization comes from player regis- tration, fund-raising events and the generosity of local business sponsorship," according to the St. Columban Minor Soccer Association.
