Tory comeback,
says Charesl
The federal Progressive
Conservative party may be in tat-
ters, but its leader Jean Charest
believes Canadians must eventual-
ly turn back to the Tories if they
want a party with a national vision
as an option to the governing
Liberals.
We are a national party. In this
country, if you don't represent a
national political force, you can't
hope to form a government,"
Charest told an audience of about
60 Grand Bend area party faithful
at an informal breakfast at
Oakwood Inn, June 7.
Charest contends both the Bloc
Quebecois (the official opposition)
and the Reform party are too
regionally based (the Bloc in
Quebec, Reform in the west) to
have the mass appeal needed to
win an election.
"I don't want a referendum in
Quebec. But, I guarantee that if
there is one, you and I will be there
to fight for our country," he said.

Alex Veens, who operates a custom -seeding service near
Seaforth, was profiled in a recent issue of Canadian Farming.
Veens planted about 1,000 acres of soybeans and wheat last year
in addition to his own 300 -acre farm.
Farmer featured in magazine
Alex Veens, of RR 4 Seaforth,
has been profiled in a recent
issue of Canadian Farming, a
national agricultural magazine
sponsored by Case IH dealers.
Each issue of Canadian Farming
profiles progressive farmers and
farm families and describes the
strategies and practices that add
to the success of their business.
In the fall of 1992, when
Ontario was unusually cool and
wet, Veens saw an opportunity
while others saw only mud.
Because of the conditions, many
farmers had been unable to get
the fall plowing done. The
opportunity Vecns recognized,
according to the article, was to

"I saw a lot of land that wasn't
going to get plowed that fall,"
Veens recalled. "I thought there
might be an opportunity to do
some custom work as well as
no -till my own ground."
In a very successful first-year
effort, Veens custom -seeded
more than 1,000 acres plus his
own 300 acres of corn, soybeans
and wheat. The farmers he
served were very satisfied with
his custom-planung operation.
